    '56-'56 brakes

"Evaporation" I can relate to that. All three units on my '55=56 Packards recently rebuilt, wheel cylinders and hoses good, but I have to add fluid fairly often, like every 2-3 months or every few hundred miles.

    '56-'56 brakes

Interesting item on ebay. And I sure agree it is difficult to check the Treadlevac brake fluid with all the air vents and wires and steering columns in the way. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...;category=34199
  4. The owner's for sale sigh said 1942! One must remember that this car show is more rods, customs, and modifieds than as off the assembly line.
  5. Nice looking car; only Packard I saw.
  6. Well, the thread really grew in length since Sunday. I just have an Everstart 34-3 in my '56 CC...that may be from Walmart and it does not occupy the full length of the battery tray. The Patrician does have CarQuest in it but I haven't checked the number yet. The first Carquest long battery in the Patrician lasted for about 5 years, which is two years longer than the life I usually get out of a battery. I'll try to get it looked up by the weekend.

    Packards at Daytona

On a cloudy and chilly 48 degrees at the international speedway spring car show and swapmeet yesterday, I saw only one Packard, a very nice 1942 Clipper for a reasonable $12,000. Found no Packard parts.
  8. I have CarQuest batteries in my '55 Patrician and my '56 Clipper Custom but am out of town until next week and cannot get you the number until then.
  9. I found nothing from ebay or any other websites by searching for any of those numbers. Will probably just have to convert to throw-away cartridge type. There are probably bunches of these filters around in old parts houses and warehouses, but how to locate them.
  10. I did a search under google for WIX 51035 and found other folks looking for this filter as well. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-44979.html
  11. Thanks, all those cross reference #s may help find one at a swapmeet or perhaps still in stock at an older car parts house.
  12. This filter was mounted on my '54 Kaiser Late Special when I acquired the car years ago; it is not the standard equipped filter/cartridge used on the car, but I stayed with it but have since used up the two filters I had.
  13. Have been discontinued. Did a search on google for Wix 51035 and found quite a few folks looking for this filter. Someone suggested the filter cross refs to a Federated P8180 but could find no information. This filter attaches via brass fittings at the top and bottom. Anyone know a source or substitute? This is NOT a cartridge type, but the whole assembly is discarded after use.

  15. Well, I don't yet understand all the process with chains and such, nor "the rings" but I still have to get under the car for a looksee....probably not until next weekend. What's the scoop on "the rings"? Why not air shocks as a solution?
  16. Great. Thanks guys. The pictures sure help. Will try to take a looksee under the car this week.
  17. Keith, I thougth I would just post this in the forum room so everyone can have access to the data and solutions and others could contribute. You were mentioning yesterday at the SDC/orphan car meet that adjustment from side-to-side of the suspension can be made via three or so rings. I did find this earlier posting from 2003 that also mentions the rings. From 1955 Packard 2/25/2003 "Regarding the loop sided TL cars they can be leveled as suggested with lengthened torsion bar struts. They came from the factory with 1 to 4 rings. Each ring represented a different length. The more rings the longer the strut. I don?t know how much longer each ring is but I don?t know why an adjustable length strut couldn?t be made." Now my '56 CC you could see yesterday is lower on the right side than the left. We take a brief look under the car today but didn't have a jack handy to get it up in the air high enough to see really good. Where are these rings (front and back?) And what do they look like? In our brief view under the car, everything appears equal side-to-side.
  18. Thanks Randy! And here is Keith's '56 Executive.

    Additives

Controversial issue on gasoline additives but it would seem the general consensus is now oil additives are necessary except for extreme circumstances to help band-aid and engine along. The lead additive to gas now days appears to be recommended at best under extreme harsh operating conditions of a car. I added a lead subsitute for years in several of my cars but have ceased to do that based on what I have been able to discern from various folks and web postings. And....it is an additional expense to already very high gas prices if you use high test 93 octane as I do.
  23. Check out Hemmings Motor News under Services. I got one fixed a few years ago by a guy in California and it was like less than a week turnaround for about $50. I don't have access at the moment to exactly where it was.
