  1. Speaking tubes where madame would tell Jeeves to stop at "The Club" were used in limousines in the 190's and teens. This was as you say a tube to talk into and the voice would be projected out from a horn behind Jeeves.

With the advent of the radio horn in the 1920's the speaking tube was sent out to the barn and the "electric microphone came into the limo. Now Jeeves still had a horn behind his head but it had a round can on the bottom called a "driver" no pun intended! The driver had wires to the microphone which was stored in a pocket on a retractable reel sometimes. Included in this there might be a button to press to activate it.

It was this way into the 1930's until the microphone became sensitive enough to just have it behind a round grill in the somewhere above the smoking set and a button in the armrest to activate it. Jeeves now has a speaker behind a grill to the left of his left foot in the kick panel.

There is another type where the mic and speaker is in the divider partition and is one piece. This appeared in the late 20's I believe and was used for years.

I think the 37 Buick would have either of the last two I mentioned.

    Hope this helped.

  6. Hey Henry,

This is the part of the Antique Road show where the audience is told what to look for when buying that vase with the hole in the bottom and not the top. I am trying to ease into telling you that what you have looks to be a model 48 2 door sedan with the top cut off. I hope you didn't pay much for it. Is the engine in it? It would be hard to restore unless the top was where you found the car and even then it would be quite a project.

  7. Congrats on getting a beautiful car. I was looking at buying her a while back and I just saw it again on the net. Those wire wheels just add so much to a great body style. The model is a 29-51, weighs 4,230 lbs, cost $1,875 and they made 7014 of them.

The leak is coming from what is called the water manifold, a series of pipes that take the hot water from the engine back to the top of the radiator. People used to reproduce these but I don't know if you can still get one. If the rest off it looks ok you can have a plumber weld a piece of pipe in it's place.

There are three clubs that you might want to join. The 29 Buick newsletter which is just 25 years old, the 27 Buick Club on the net and the national Buick Club. You should have a local one also. Check out Bob's Automobilia on the net.

  8. Hey Mark, Did you see this in person? He has this for sale a while now as it was high priced. I told him it wasn't a Master but a Standard model. Looks like it could be a nice car. Lots of 1920's Buicks on the market now and I'm glad to see them having a 25-45 myself. As to it being rare, well they only made 550 of them so I would say that it's quite rare.

  9. A few years ago I was out on the east end of Long Island to see a 38 Buick that was for sale. My friend who was with me mentioned that Parker Wickham's car collection was close by. I drove into the airport and found my way to where the collection was housed by asking somebody inside the machine shop, which in itself looked quite interesting. I asked if somebody could open it up for us and he replied "Just go in it's open". I forget that being just an hour away from NYC it's like living in the country. I drove over to the building and we walked right in. It was like we were kids in a candy store. Here were some cars that I had never heard of , let alone seen. We were there about twenty minutes before the owner came in and he couldn't have been nicer to us. He answered any questions and gave a guided tour. It was a tie as to what impressed me more , the collection or the man. I learned later that the collection was sold quietly. I would have liked one of the many fine cars. (Owen Magnetic in my garage) Here are all the pictures I took.

  10. The paint code 285 means that the car was originally painted Commodore blue with Imperial black molding and window inserts. Stripe is Riviera cream. Wire wheels are black. Wood wheels commodore blue.

That's all I have. The trim number is the interior. I don't have that listing.

  11. This movie is called Upper World and features an early 1930's town car limousine. This car is featured in the movie with a young Andy Devine as the chauffer. He gets a speeding ticket in it. There also is a Packard coupe and a Pierce Arrow appearing once. The dialogue that Ginger Rogers says in the backseat is priceless but can you pick out the problem?

  14. Dave (trimacar),

Good morning, you brought up one of the many bad car collecting experiences I have had. The guy who "broke down" still has the early 1920's car advertised for sale but it has been sold. He got it at a good price and put it up for sale at four times that. Another one I missed goes into the books.

At least on the pickers show they seem to not go nuts with the resale prices. They put a fair price on the item. As some of you have noted that this is a TV show so who really knows. I like to watch it anyway.
