1. oops
forgot about the rod. I literally cut it down, and rounded the end(made a radius) with a belt sander!
Jim
  2. Erick
yes you have a good master cylinder to work with. And the lines are different in fittings sizes. Go to a local parts store to get help with trying different short pieces of line to match your master, but also remember to get hold of a junction block of some kind for splitting the rears, fronts...and match your plumbing to those as well. I used two 65 buick junction blocks, one for the rear, one for the front. On the one for the rear I had to plug one opening of it, using a cut off brake line welded closed. It may sound like a hack job but it works!! good Luck!
Jim
  3. Eric
You described it the way I did it. Rear reservoir is for the front, and front reservoir is for the rear. No proportioning valve. But be sure the master cyl. you have is for a 4 wheel drum, not disk/drum. I used the splitter that came with the car for rear, and plugged one of the holes using a cut off brake line end welded closed. and another splitter from a parts car doing the same for the front. This seems to work well for me. As far as the rod goes, I believe I cut it down to fit, as the back of the master (67 electra) was different than the 65 single master. But bolted up the same. Good luck! And if I can help more drop me an email or post.
Jim

    Hi Impala
If I were you Ide stick with a 401 or 425 Buick nailhead v8 that came with those cars.If your going to change, then theres a bit of customizing mounts, driveshaft etc. I bought a 65 Electra a few years ago and someone tried to put a buick 350 in it and hacked it. I replced it with the original type of engine. Much better now. There are still these engines around so give that a try and good luck!
Jim
5. Hi Guys
I have a 65 Electra 225 conv. I put a dual master cyl. in it, using one from a 67 Electra. You do not need a proportioning valve as long as you keep 4 wheel drums. Prop. valve is needed with front disks rear drums. The dual master for a disk system is a bit different in that it has some kind of valving in it. Now if you put a dual master in your riv, you just need to make the plumbing work, I used a splitting block from a 65 wildcat, plugged one side, and joined the rear lines to that. The front lines kept the same splitting block, and I plugged one hole in that one too.
This seems to work great, and it has already saved me headache, because i have blown a front brake hose, and could have lost all four wheels.
Drop me an email if I can help, good luck!
Jim

  6. Hi
Sorry to hear bout your broken bolt. If you have access to a milling machine or at least a drill press, get a carbide drill or end mill. It can cut thru high speed steel. Get more than one drill though, because they are brittle. I use this method in the machine shop I work in when a tap is broken in a blind hole. After you drill out the remains, drill the hole out for the proper tap drill size for retapping. Try to hold the redrill hole as close to the original position as possible. Good Luck!
Jim

  8. Hey Guys
I understand not wanting this Electra to get winter trashed but I must admit to using a couple of old Buicks in Boston year round too. This guy is young and hasnt got the $ to be preserving this car like a museum piece. I think its ok to use it, as long as he understands that the winter will eventually kill it. A car is meant to be driven, and it still keeps the hobby alive. My 2 cents worth.
  9. Hey Dan
Tried to email you but came back undeliverable. I am also in Mass. Could you email some pics? I have a 65 Electra225 convert, maybe theres something I can use. Thanks! jstorrer@gis.net
Jim
  10. Sorry to hear some people have had trouble with the Buick Farm, but I can not complain.I bought some brake cables and other misc parts without any problem at all. Who knows maybe there are some yoyos working there, but I havent run in to anyone like that yet, and till I do Ill continue with them. But its good that folks tell us about any problems where they shop for parts. Thanks for the info guys.
Jim
  11. John
Sorry to hear bought your electrical troubles. My 65 Electra is plagued with some of these symptoms. I have found lots of rust in the fuse box where the fuses contact, giving me poor connections, also dirty or bad battery connections, body grounds, will do this too. Also is your battery in good shape? Maybe a bad cell is acting up. Good luck and let us know if you find the problem
Jim
  12. Hi Guys
I have to agree with others posting here, BE CAREFUL about putting water down the throat of the carb, water wont compress so something will give! But I used this method 15 years ago on my 62 electra and it did work, I raised the idle to about 1000 rpm, then dribbled some water in the carb, repeating slowly. If you watch the tail pipe and rev the car you can see black come out of it! I have to do this on my 65 Electra convert, it has a bit of carbon in there Im sure. Good luck all!
Jim
  13. Hey 65
I have a 65 Electra225 convert. I still have all drum brakes. But I did convert to a dual master cylinder. And it seems to work well.
But I cant agree with others about the aluminum drums being as good or better than disk. Ill bet the earlier Buicks with disks will match, though experimentation and lots of checking, measuring would be needed. I believe the 67 or 68 had disks as an option... Ide even try a 69 or 70 Buick, olds or pontiac. There are Books called Hollander that can tell what parts will fit what cars.
Please let me know what you can find. Good Luck!
Jim
