  1. Thank you for the info , can you or someone on the forum post the radial size range for 16 inch rims that would work? I do not need brand names or places to get them , just the radial equivalent numbers that would work so I can find something here aka fill in blank ______ - _______ -- ________ example of size numbering system I need 205 - 75R -16 , etc
  2. I had already checked a chart on their site before posting and did not see a chart that covered the 6.5 x 16 size
  3. Hi Guys Will the following radial tire sizes fit and work in a 1940 Buick special w/ 16" rims? 185 75R 16 195 75R 16 205 75R 16
  4. Thank you all for the wonderful and informative posts Frank , what you posted above may explain what I saw at the parts place I asked the parts salesman to bring me out an AC R46 plug when he put it on the table and opened the box I saw immediately that the metal that bends over the electrode came out further Then the champion rj12C that I brought with me for comparison when they were side by side That got me worried which is why I kept the champion and had started the original post now when thinking back to that day I recall moving the AC box and believe it had several letters after the R46 and believe one may have been an S so I am thinking now he did not bring me the correct R46 plug I will go back there In a few days to check on this
  5. Guys A quick question How do you remove the glass bowl on the fuel filter of a 1940 special? most of the old filters I have worked on have a knurled screw on them This one has a spring doohicky
  6. ok , I just want to use what everyone else is using I can not get an AC 46 locally as it is discontinued but I can get an AC R46 from someone I know locally if everyone is using an AC R45 perhaps I should get that instead I only want to buy a plug that everyone else is using and has been for years so I know it has a track record of being safe for the straight 8 motor
  7. Thank you all for your help , time and patience with a newbie just to confirm everyone here uses an AC R46 plug in their straight 8 motors with no exception and have used them for years with no problem to the engine
  8. I defiantly do not want to use something bad for the engine but all the cross references I have checked say a champion rj12c (also called a champion 592 ) is the correct replacement for the ac 46 the ac R46 is not even on the cross reference for the ac 46 and I compared the electrode tip of the ac r45 that produces the spark as much taller (goes in deeper) than the champion rj12 c which looks physically identical to the ac 46 let me ask this to everyone please post replies anyone else using a champion rj12c ( or champion 592) , how long have you been using them and how well do they work anyone using an ac R46 (not the ac46) , how long have you been using them and how well do they work
  9. 12. I just wanted to confirm the shift pattern on the column of the Buick special It is an H pattern with; 1st gear toward me and up 2nd gear toward me and down 3rd gear away from me and up where is reverse?
  13. I went and bought another champion rj12c , which directly cross referenced to an ac46 when I asked him to bring out an ac R46 and compared it to the champion rj12c the electrode was much higher almost 3 x which means it would go in deeper into the cylinder so rather then get an unknown I stuck with the champions that were already in the car
  14. Hi guys; I saw a WIX 51001 oil filter element that cross references to an AC P-112 has anyone used the wix and is it a decent filter?
  15. Hi Guys I was giving the 1940 special another look over and noticed a small wing nut type knob on top of the thermostat where the 2 hoses go out to travel into the passenger interior anyone know its function? I am giving a wild guess that it is a shut off valve for water going to the heating core I noticed there are no switches in the cabin nor a blower to activate heat so am guessing this is a real economy way to do it? is that what the wing nut valve near the thermostat is for?
  16. Thank you for the his contact info as there are a few smaller odds and ends that I need right now I need to get a few bigger items that I would rather find , make , or buy locally do you happen to know anyone on long Island? The reason I ask is I want to try a dynamic test soon to determine overall condition and to see if the car could be used as a fair weather daily driver (5-10 miles max) I'm not planning a restoration just looking for enough bits and pieces to get the ball rolling I know I need an exhaust as it was removed and none remains other then a broken piece of it in the trunk also as mentioned in other posts I need a battery with those two items I can do a dynamic test once I change the various fluids
  17. The location is long island NY , everything is usually much higher due to high cost of living and high cost of doing business here , any old tyme buick used parts dealers here?
  18. thank you for the reply , sadly muffler shops cost a fortune over here , its better for me to put it in myself as long as I know what I should buy such as length , routing , diameter of pipe and muffler inlet / outlet diameter are there any cheap places to get muffler parts for these cars?
  19. Hi Guys Does anyone know what various years or cars or models exhaust systems would fit into a 1940 special? I have only seen a few listed in the $300 range which is a bit too pricey for my budget The car is an old survivor so I'm not planning on doing a restoration or make it any type of show car I plan on fixing it up so it runs and drives and drive it appx 5 milers a day to a local church I volunteer at anyone have any suggestions on what I should buy or use?
  20. Posted 15 hours ago Though AC46's are rare, they can be found on e-bay now and then. AC plugs get hotter as the number goes up, so you could use a 47 or a 48 without too much concern. There is also an AC-C49 which is in production and is used quite often in generators. HOWEVER, if you are running a plug cover, you must physically match the length of the replacement plug to the spec'd AC 46. Thread depth and insulator height must match also. Ask me how I know............ Mike in Colorado Thank you for the tip , I found the original sheet metal covers for the spark plugs in the trunk would the plugs I have in the car (champion RJ12C ) which cross reference with the AC 46 fit in w/ no problem? would the AC R46 fit in w/ no problem?
  21. Closest is 175/75R16. Good luck finding them. Ben Ben thanks for the tire size conversion , if I cant find that size what is the closest size to it that I can find that would not interfere I the wheel wells?
  22. Thank you for the link to the manual its going to be a help , still waiting for the guy to find the one he has for me and drop it off guy I got car from was 2nd owner and says its orig motor motor number matches reg ,and looks right so have no reason to doubt him
  23. Thank you for the additional info , it defiantly has an oil filter as it is exact to the posted picture I saw a filter element on the web model # 51001 which I think cross references to an AC P112
