  1. I've read somewhere that there was speculation that the first gen Riv was going to be front wheel drive, to compete with the possibility of front wheel drive thunderbirds. The 2nd gen tbirds had the engine very far forward, with the possibility of installing front wheel drive. Ford wanted to beat GM to the punch with luxury FWD cars, and I think GM wanted to be ready. This is all speculation based off of something I read years ago.

  2. They may have put a reversed vane impeller on the water pump? I think it could be cooled, I think it's just cavitation issues. I've heard of people using a reverse pump on SBF's, and having overheating issues because the impeller was effectively pushing the water in the wrong direction. A different impeller seemed to fix it.

  3. I was seriously looking into electric assist power steering for my mustang. It involved adding an assist motor from a Saturn Vue at the end of the column near the floor, and some type of simple controller that had an adjustment for the amount of assist you wanted. Turn a knob for more or less assist. Guys were using manual rack and pinion setups, and the electric motor for power assist. I thought it was pretty clever stuff.

  4. I love the light steering. My 67 mustang had super light steering, I could easily drive with my pinky finger. My 92 vette's steering is so stiff it's like the mustang when it broke a belt. I have carpal-tunnel in my wrist, it causes it to hurt. Gotta use both hands sometimes.

With the mustang, it used to wander and hunt, changing the alignment from the old bias ply settings helped a lot. It also saved wear on the wide radials. Telriv posted these specs for first gen Riv's before: Castor: 3* to 4* ; Camber: -.25* ; Toe in between 5/32 to 1/4"

That would be correct. What will eventually separate me from my 1985 Corvette will be the point when it is no longer worth the pain and agony required for entry and exit—such a contrast with the newer ones.

Same here. I know i'll eventually have to sell it because I can't get out of it anymore. The tall door sills are what kills it for me. I'm 6'5", so it's my own problem for picking such a small, low car.

  6. I'm 48, i've owned my 64 for 2.5 years. When I bought it, it had been sitting for 10 years. I thought it was going to be a simple fluid and hose change, 2 weeks tops. Turned into rewiring almost everything firewall forward. Love the car, fun to work on, making sure everything is done best as possible. I had a 67 mustang daily driver for the past 15 years, but the motor was giving up, so I did too. Pretty much gave the car away. Definitely a buyers market right now.

Current daily driver is a 92 vette. Nice comfortable car, easy to drive, but it's not so easy to get in and out of.

The 94 - 96 Buick Roadmaster Estate wagons were equipped with the same LT1 engine as the 'Vette except for the aluminum heads.  My 94 RMW gets between 22 and 24 mpg on the highway depending on whether on on the federal highway headed to my sister's house at 65 mph or running down the Interstate at 75 (so I'm not impeding other traffic.) I get around 18 mpg in the city.  What's the difference  between the mileage you're getting (got) with your 'Vette and what I get with 150K on the clock in my wagon?

I looked up the vette, it's 15 city 23 freeway so I guess i'm not doing that bad. I think the vette has higher flow injectors and fuel pump, and a more aggressive cam. It's factory 300hp. Mine has 2.59 gears in the rear, which seems like a cruel joke. Hey, lets build a performance car, and cripple it with airplane gearing. I guess that was an attempt to get better mpg.

    Hi Steve,

I see you're also own a chrome bumper Corvette!   That makes at least 3 of us here on this forum. ...

    😀

I wish! I have a 92, the first year of the LT1. I bought it as a daily driver, got an excellent 55k mile car for 5K. With is "modern" fuel injection and computer, I only get 14 mpg around town, and i'm not sure why. I go easy on the pedal, but they seem to only get 18 mpg at best.
