The banner on the wall to the right reads, "Pierce-Arrow Pacific Sales Co." one of the Pierce-Arrow Sales Corporation operations.  The sale of the Pierce-Arrow Sales Corporation division of the company was a condition for the million dollar loan by the Buffalo banks after the 1934 bankruptcy to keep the company going.   Sales would be handled by private distributors thereafter, so wrote Marc Ralston in his book.  It didn't help sales.  Ed, Anything to add?

Is that a mk 9 jag , actually took a white one as part payment 19k  towards a house in 1985 , unfortunately as business was difficult at the time, kept it in garage for a few months, never drove it and passed it on at cost , pity would love it now.

She was part exchanged with Dennis Bros, Guildford  c1929. Dennis then sold her to Billings Printers (part of Caxton Press) as works engine and she remained with them until 1961, when acquired for preservation for the sum of £50 estimated to be her scrap value. She was used during WW2 when Guildford was bombed.  Southampton must have been pleased with her as they bought a smaller 4 cylinder version in 1915, named "Ada". She was scrapped in 1932.

    Great info Colin thanks

grandmother may not have seen her then as think she started trading in Southampton in the 30s , must have been fire crew from Ada who rescued my Mother when bombed out then , bless them .

  4. I live in Southampton Uk , perhaps my grandparents would have seen the magnificent beast or it may have attended the family house when bombed in WW2 if it was still being used ( unfortunately parents and grandparents gone so no  way of checking , but very likely I think as my grandmother had shop near St Mary’s fire station and must have seen it frequently . )

I hadn’t seen this car before but It occurred to me , that there’s a marked similarity in front styling to my first car a 1952 Austin A40 Somerset , makes me wonder if the bmc designers were influenced subconsciously or deliberately 😊

  6. Being abroad and having  always had cars shipped in enclosed containers for the sea journey , I have found the relative cost of open transport within the states more expensive  than container booked for whole trip to Cyprus or Uk

i have bought cars from , Florida and Chicago , Los Angeles and Santa Monica.

The florida to NJ was $450 ( open trailor) , but  the Chicago to NJ roughly the same ,but was in container all the way to Uk for extra cost of only $900 , west coast shipping recommended. Cars bought on east coast Los Angeles to coast port 3 in one container $400 , then all the way to Cyprus $2600, good value, compared to st Monica to coast port open trailer one car $350, then container to Cyprus $2000 , movements on east coast by American freight services .

although I always try to do the best deal possible, it seems combining overseas with internal US pretty good value , but within US pretty standard whether in container or not , but definitely cheaper for multiple loads . So personally I think good condition , valuable cars in container even if sharing with another car to cut cost is best option , project cars unless rare , cheapest quote

  7. Having read through all the posts concerning this disgraceful scam , I’m afraid in these days of  internet shopping it won’t be the last as this method is widely open to fraud. This fraudulent multiple selling of a single article is common  with any commodity, particularly property, in Cyprus where I live most of the time , I know of many instances where crooked developers have sold the same properties to sometimes 3 or 4 people , recently 100 apartments mainly sold online to Russians and Australians were subsequently sold again to Turkish customers.

However back to car related topic , I have bought from three  American dealers , Gateway in Chicago and Beverley Hills car club and  Kurt Tanner and can only say all where beyond reproach and pleasure to do business with . Kurt who also restores cars  is a great guy and been very helpful.

Although I must admit I agree with comments made , where dealers are selling on behalf owners , they are not sufficiently aware of all defects and can unwittingly mislead . Which I found to my cost as one project car  was severely inferior to the  description , the dealer concerned has apologised and offered a large discount off a further purchase

Therefore as also stated above the safest deal is the one you go to see,  inspect ,pay for and take home with you.

Being abroad , it’s not feasible to personally inspect cars in US so have used a inspector and have had repairs done in restoration workshops and can only say the level of service and extent of the service and trust by people who initially where strangers was far beyond my expectations and now count some as friends , so although their are plenty of scammers out there, there  are also mainly  great honest folks too.

  8. Good information Matt , I’m definitely  a Buick lover , sadly sold my Beutiful 53 special convertible due to suitable storage problems

but since then have been looking for replacement, while I sort new garage this year . Convertibles are warm dry climate cars ,so I keep my cars in Cyprus , but due to this covid 19 pandemic, I’m not able to return yet , otherwise I would have bid on the 39 , Missed opportunity as was within my budget . Will watch 41 with interest and hope it reaches beyond my budget

    cheers

I think I said it in the other thread--I'd happily roll the dice on the yellow '39 at that price. If it hasn't unwound by now, it's not going to, so I'm not too concerned about the bodywork comments (which are just guesses from the photos anyway). Probably a good tour car, very rare, and always worth at least that much money.

The black '41 Roadmaster should bring $45-50 easily. If they had spent some time to clean it up, they could probably pull even more, but as it sits it looks kind of neglected and probably has some needs. I doubt it'll make reserve. The dearth of discussion on it suggests there isn't much interest and even less knowledge aside from two or three posters (one of whom I recognize from this board).

Having looked a similar cars and the prices asking , I agree with your estimate Matt , but as I thought the 39 made 10k less than what I expected , so keeping with that in mind went for 36

are you going to be more precise and name a figure for charities sake , I will amend my offer to any charity as long as they accept PayPal as have no other way of paying in the states .

You'll see more action in the last hour or so of the auction. I would wager that the reserve won't be met. Bring-A-Nitpicker is the wrong venue for a car like that.

Having never bid on BAT , wondered do they show reserve , I know on eBay you keep bidding then message says reserve met and on the I bidder site  I use in Uk they state at onset the reserve or no reserve , better system I feel.

having looked at similar cars to the 41 would expect the reserve to be high so like me all us dreamers are dreaming

As I said, I love the 53's and 54's of Chevrolet, but they're just more pedestrian than some other cars of the 50's. To give an analogy people love the looks of MGA's and people love the looks of Morris Minors, but one is just more dramatic and stylish than the other. I'd still love to have either a Morris Minor OR a '54 Chevy...more than a '55 Chevy, but '55 Chevys have a lot more market value than either of those because the '55 is thought to be stylish and such (I guess.)

I have a Mga and have had a Morris minor1000 ( mid wife’s car or British beetle 😀) reliable but terrible , completely different designs as you say and I can verify completely different driving experience , Mga great car 1600 quite nippy too .if you ever get the chance go for the Mga
