victorialynn2, This sounds like a lot of fun !  I'm jealous, lol. One of our friends did a B/J auction as a volunteer earlier this year, had a ball, made new friends, got lots of freebies, got invited back, and later, even ended up getting a neat car from someone he'd met there !  I'm bettin' you'll have a lot of fun, please post some more about it when you can.

I will. I’m pretty sure I read I can’t use my phone while there but I certainly will report back. I know it will be fun. They let me pick my shifts and how many. I’m new to the area and it gives me something besides work to do. I also volunteered to sell donuts at a local car show in January after the organizer asked me too. The car people I’ve met here, in TX, OR, & FL have mostly been super nice people. I will enjoy the process.

Im excited for you, but not sure I would say with you. Sounds like work to me, not that I am afraid of work. I have been to more motorcycle auctions than I can count, maybe 2 car auctions. Even as a bidder it is hectic and nerve wracking. Standing in the line to get a titled transferred after a completed sale or waiting to register a car or get a number always seems akin to going to a dentist that has an office at the dmv. I have never been to one on the scale of Mecum Kissimee, I can only imagine. Honestly jockeying 15 or 20 cars around (or how many each person will be handling) doesnt appeal all that much to me, especially for a t shirt and a coke or whatever the compensation will be. Not trying to sound greedy but spending a day or two working for a company that is making millions, selling cars to people that will be dropping 6 figures without a second thought, and doing so voluntarily to keep 'their' machine oiled doesnt sound like how I want to spend a long weekend.

After my old man curmudgeonly diatribe, I do hope you have fun doing so.

Sounds similar to my childhood and several times in my life when I hung around friends with garages of cars.

I have done a lot of volunteer work at golf tournaments and various other functions. I think I will enjoy this. Even if I was paid, the amount they pay would not be enough to sway me. I would be doing this purely for the experience and to meet people. Beats sitting at home working on my computer.

Victoria………expect to be near and smelling like exhaust fumes……..of course you may end up in a place where cars are not running. Personally after fifty years of car auctions……..I never go near them unless absolutely necessary.

You mean like how I grew up with my dad in his garage, how I smelt anfter working on his cars in TX and how I smell when I start up the 57? Actually it’s much better since I had the 57 carb rebuilt.

I used to date mechanics, that smell and the smell of oil was an aphrodisiac. 😂

That does sound like fun. I hope you have a good time. What type of driving will you be doing as a volunteer? Is it only the "hired" drivers who are seen on TV?

    Robert

I believe only the hired ones drive onstage. This first year I will be paired with someone experienced. I will learn more at the driver’s meeting in a couple weeks.

  5. Some local friends put me in touch with the company that schedules drivers for this auction. It’s billed as the largest car auction in the world. After watching it on TV for many years, I’m excited to get a behind the scenes view this year.

Has anyone done this and if so, what was your experience like? I don’t really know what to expect, but I imagine it would be a whole lot of fun.

That is absolutely the most immature quote I have ever heard! The truth is rarely kind or nice! Those that think that way have their heads firmly buried in the sand!

Honestly I would LOVE to NOT have to debate any of this crap! I build cars, I cruise cars, I show cars, I race cars, I have for decades & for the last 41 years I have transported other peoples collectors cars. I do not however have any kind of stomach for those that seek to ruin our hobby.

Now I will be leaving very early in the morning for a car show/ get together in central Kentucky with 100 or so guys from the HAMB. My Wife & I have been looking forward to this for a few months now, so all you folks who don't build cars you can continue to bash those of us that defend this great hobby with a passion from your basements/ safe spaces while I am out enjoying this great hobby & the folks in it

    God Bless

Hey Bill, I think we can all have our opinions and be nice and kind in the way we share them. Also, I don’t think that it’s an us and them situation here. As far as I can tell, everyone commenting on this thread enjoys the hobby.

I share your feeling of wanting to defend our right to have classic cars and I think everyone else commenting does also.

  7. We have classic cars and a Tesla in our home and we peacefully coexist. I think there is room for both. Weather is changing much more rapidly since the industrial revelation. My research has shown that by far and large the issue is industry, commercial use and things like private jets that are contributing most of the pollution. All residential use is just 20%, but it feels we are disproportionately being zeroed in on to conserve. However, the people that own or profit from industry and have jets want to point fingers at those of us who have gas powered cars. Sure every bit contributes, but the same people who drive the green agenda are some of the absolute worst offenders. Don’t make me give up my classics when you travel the world in your private jet.

This past weekend I went to visit a shop where my car is being worked on.  It's been a slow process as the restorer works part time and I had limited the monthly spend.

There really wasn't much progress over the last visit, and it had been a year.  We talk quite often and he has been telling me he is slowing down and his life is catching up with him.

At what should I pull the car out of there?  It's a horrible time as I having a addition put on the house and the garage here has to be empty.  But I am afraid if he gets worse my car could be stuck there.  I can't afford that.

Anyone have a shop near Orlando that has done them right?

    Thanks, appreciate any suggestions

Let me know what kind of car it is and what needs to be done. I know a couple Ford guys, a couple Corvair guys, and a body shop.  I’m in the Saint Cloud/Orlando area. If they are not available or don’t have the expertise to work on your car, they may know people who can. It’s a pretty tight car community and most people I’ve met seem to know each other.

I have found asking around at Napa, or other parts stores, can result in some good recommendation for mechanics who work on various old cars, as well as asking local car clubs. Nationally I’ve just had better luck with NAPA. I have also found quite a few clubs on Facebook. (Search car show events, car clubs in groups, classic cars, etc.) Also go to car shows like the ones in Old Town Kissimmee. Ask for the “Mayor” of Old Town. He works on cars also. In a few months I was able to find a network of people to help me with my cars.

  9. Most people realize there are a few crazies out there that can’t be satisfied and a few reviews that are just not legitimate.

There are websites that scrap photos from eBay and other sites and repost them as their ads to con people. That’s what happened in my case That’s why it’s important for buyers to be careful.

  10. Also, if you fix the top, the trunk will close right. I’ve had mine adjusted a couple times, mostly after shipping the car, and it hasn’t been real problematic for the guys who worked on it, including Jack, who is an active member in this forum. (It’s not hydraulic, but electric, with switches and solenoids.)

This car is nicely optioned with the padded dash and ac. It also has the tissue box, so I am pretty sure it has other options as well. I really wish mine had ac here in Florida, but at least there are air vents which help when you are moving.

This is so very true. You can be anything you want to be on the internet. All you have to do is contact a web hosting company, fill in one of their many templates, tell everybody you "wrote the code" for your website & SHAZZAM...you are a legit company!

That is so sad @victorialynn2, especially because I believe your Father has passed! Unfortunately those bottom feeders have NO conscience &  don't care.

I have a lawyer who is married to my cousin & a couple of years ago was certified to argue cases at the supreme court level. He & I are diametrically opposed on just about everything, but we are fine at family get togethers & actually joke about it.  I help him with auto related questions as he couldn't change his oil on anything he owns & he answers any questions I have about law. A few years back I asked him about some fake slander about me on a mickey mouse website (obviously not true) & what I could do about it. After describing the homeless guy who created it, his exact quote was " you can't get blood from a turnip" & not to worry about it because it was borne out of an extreme jealousy of my business. Really a shame things like this happen, but this is the bad side of the internet.

Yes, dad passed in 2019, but it happened when he was alive. He was not aware of it though. It just so happened that the attorney was able to track his business down somehow through some computer skills to find his IP address in Russia and trace it back to him personally. He then served him with some legal papers. The guy settled because I believe he didn’t want to get tied up in a lawsuit. They are definitely bottom feeders to pray on anyone. If they put their energy into some legit business they could probably do just as well. At least we were able to cost him some money, I think around 10k, which the attorney kept most of, and rightly so. The attorney put a bunch of time in it and neither of us expect anything out of it. He was mostly just trying to harass him and get the picture taken down. I was happy to get anything out of it. I was happy the guy got called on the carpet and took the photo down.

The trunk would worry me more than the top that does not retract. Does this mean that there is no way to seal the storage compartment in the event of rain? That would be a good question for the seller. I agree nice job on all of the pics by the seller.

I have a ‘57. You can purchase a cover for the storage area, if you have the box installed, that would keep water out. Without the box, you probably wouldn’t put anything back there anyway.  I’d be more concerned with water finding its way inside the car when it’s raining. Also the wipers on mine are not very good, and I’d assume these are similar, so I don’t drive it in the rain unless I get caught like I did about a week ago. It was a downpour and the wipers couldn’t keep up.

VL2. Good luck in FL. Get the grandkids out in the cars as often as possible to carry on great grandpa’s legacy! Babysitting fees should be at least washing the cars for you every other time.

First I have to get seatbelts in them or they won’t be allowed to go for a ride. 🤣
