I got a call one morning from a car friend of mine when I was at work (1979). He said he was selling his cars and buying a boat. (Big mistake!) I had a couple of hours to get over to his place and make a deal on his 34 Dodge Conv Coupe that I had asked about a few times. If I didn't want it their were some hot-rodders coming over in the afternoon! Told the boss I was sick and left immediately for Deep Cover, just outside of Vancouver. It was stuffed under his carport on the side of a steep driveway. Needless to say I bought it and asked my wife for forgiveness afterword. That went better than I had anticipated. I had to get a crew of 4-5 guys to help and borrowed a trailer but the rescue went well. It was a great time and I still have many good memories about that adventure.
I quickly found a correct 34 engine, trans and radiator and had it on the road looking like that for many years. It's at the back of my shop now still waiting for its turn.

nice,is the block aluminum or a alloy ? did mitchell have a 8 cyl ? the reason i ask is i know of a 8 cylinder similar engine in a garage with aluminum block on a whole chassis and did not see any tags or ID and your pic reminded me of it
The crankcase is aluminum and the cylinders are cast iron. That was very typical in those days. Mitchell never had an 8 cyl engine that early. Maybe in the 20's?? You can see that my engine doesn't have removable cylinder heads. Again this was very typical back then . If the engine you know about has a removable cylinder head then it's probably 1915 or newer.

Is it just here for a restoration or has someone local bought it ?
It was purchased at auction maybe 3 years ago by a fellow from West Van. It's in a restoration shop locally.

Only a very small number of Welch's have survived. One in particular was owned by noted author and early participant in the old car hobby Ralph Stein
The car is featured in one of his well known books about vintage cars.
This same car is now in West Vancouver, Canada and is undergoing a full restoration.

Watch for a number of emails.
You'll enjoy driving the Chrysler. It's very advanced compared to other 1931 lower end cars.

In the spring I was lucky enough to acquire a 1914 Mitchell 6-60 6 pass. torpedo. It's front and center in my shop now. So what do you get someone who has a car like this? Well I was surprised and pleased to open a large box Christmas day and find a Mitchell dealer sign to hang on the shop wall.
My son made this on his CNC. It's made of oak and is 39 inches long by 1 1/2 inches thick. He copied a pic of the sign he found on-line. I guess I going to need one similar for my 14 Premier. My birthday's in March!!

I'm needing to get my wood wheels rebuilt for my 14 Mitchell. In the past I have had great wheel work done by Stutzman's. I've been trying to reach him now for 3 weeks and all I get is a busy signal. I know the procedure is to leave a message and Noah will return the call but I can't even get to that stage. I've been phoning 1-330-897-1391, the number on his business card. Has anybody heard if they are having difficulties or perhaps they've changed their phone #?

The next two cars to the left of the possible big Oaklands may be Mitchells, a high-end make carried by P&O. Reference for the 1915-16 Mitchells is hard to find, but from what we can tell, they did have a somewhat out of date look, and a tall hood line, as seen here
I agree with you that the 2 cars you think are Mitchells are in fact that. They could be 1913, 1914, or 1915. They look very similar to the 14 6-60 sitting in my garage.

I have an original Bob Genn oil painting of a 1912 Oakland car, and he was a family friend of my parents (painting is signed and dedicated on the reverse). Given that his usual painting subject was landscape, I think it's probably an unusual piece by him. I never realized that this car might have been his at one point. My mother liked old cars, and I just assumed he probably painted it for her as a "one off." Thanks for the post.
This is very interesting to me as I have a 1912 Oakland and live in Surrey BC. I've had my car since the late 1970's and it's been restored since 1987. I wonder when Bob painted his picture? It's possible he saw my car somewhere and used it for a model. As far as I know there were no other 12 Oaklands in the province or possibly even in Canada until about 7 years ago when another was bought out of California. That car is in Maple Ridge today.
Here are a couple of pictures of my Oakland

Was the engine in the 19111 a Northway engine?
The engine is almost identical to my 1912 Oakland engine which was made by Northway. I believe Coles used Northway engines for some of the years.

Ken, you are 100% correct! Here is what we know so far (sellers are sending us some more info so I hope it includes more history)
The car was initially sold near Vancouver, and remained in the original family from 1940 to the early 2,000s. We believe the cosmetic restoration was done at some point during that time.
The car was with a TX collector who had the engine rebuilt (pro job with all parts from Max Merrit). We have some corrospondence between this owner and the original owners from this time.
The car was with the latest CT owners from 2013 to now, who are friends (we didn't know they had this car though, small world!).
Nice to have a car we know history on and definately want to reseaech it a bit more!
I went through some old rosters I have for the Vintage Car Club of Canada and I believe I found out who owned your car in the 1990's. The car was in Abbotsford BC then and that owner passed away in 2017. If you want his name and address from that time send me an email thru the forum.
Good luck with your car.

I've run the original water pump on my 34 Coupe for the last 20 years and I've never had a problem with the engine overheating.

The 34 Dodge came with a vacuum operated clutch. That's the unit you're looking at. I don't think it was terribly successful and a lot have been removed over the years. I have this unit for my 34 but it's not installed. My Dad used to work on these in the day and he didn't have much good to say about them!
