The flip side is they were designed for serviceability because you hade to service them continuously. I have not had to touch an oil pump since my 83' Buick shredded a timing chain and the pump ate the pieces. That was 1994. I like my Stude but for reliable transportation we are MUCH better off today. I am glad to hear this worked out.

If you go to NAPA and ask for GL-1 they will just look at you like you have three eyes. Tell them you need part#65-201. That is a 1-gallon jug of SAE-90 GL-1. Should be correct in your transmission.

Well my Saturday ended early when the core plug on the back of the block popped out. Never made it to the car show and never saw another Stude. In fact I ended up getting towed home for the first time ever. At least the weather was nice! Now I need to figure out how to seat that plug through the bell housing bolt access hole in the transmission tunnel.

Mine is a base model double-dater that has been in the family since right after the war. I am not sure who put the 1950 bumpers on it but it happened before I was born. I keep a web site about the car.

Those tune-up cards are very cool and useful. Do you have one for a 41 Champion? If you have scans of all of them maybe we can get them on the ASC SDC web sites. Worst case I could throw them on my web server or send them to the Old Car Manual Project.

In this day and age you should expect and demand pictures. I bet it is a scam.

If you heat the bracket up I bet you could un-bend it. It would not be a spring any more but you are probably not planning on using the bumpers as bumpers either
. If it were my car I would keep looking. There was somebody parting out a 40 commander on e-bay a couple months ago. I am 99% sure those brackets are the same. Maybe if you look at closed auctions you can contact them.

Just a guess but a provision for right-hand drive? Or since your are in Australia left-hand-drive?

When I pulled the engine on my Champion the main reason was to replace every leaking seal and gasket. The felt seal in the timing cover was about the only one that was NOT leaking a drop. I replaced it (kind of a pain) but the new one does not leak either. I would not worry about it. I am sure you have plenty of other places you can blow money and time on.

If you need somthing right away get two lengths of all-thread at the hardware store, beat one end flat, drill a hole, done. You can then just watch e-bay until someone is parting out a Champion and make them an offer. I know you can used the engineering drawings and get new parts made but for something like this I know the parts are out there so you just need a stop-gap until you find them. There will be plenty of really hard to find things you can spend your money and time on for that car (like the rear fender gravel shields!).

OK, that makes sense. I don't have a set of those. They would be very easy to make. Mild steel bars with a mounting hole on one flattened end and threads on the other. I will measure and take pictures this weekend.
If you wait long enough you will probably find one being parted out on ebay or elsewhere. I used to know of one but he sold the remains a month or so ago.

For some reason I have never heard of a core support. What is it and what does it do? At the very least I can get you pictures and measurements off my car.

If you are anywhere near Marion, Ohio (central Ohio) the Marion Historical Society is hosting the 3rd annual pre-1950 car show. All "origional" vintage cars. June 23 with registration starting at 8:30. There are tours and events both Friday and Saturday night but the car show is Saturday only. This year I am going to try and beg a ride in a Stanley Steamer...

I just bought that Champ wiper transmission from you on e-bay. Nice part! Do you have any more of the dual wiper parts for a 39-46 Champ? I would like to get mine back to stock.
I also am looking for the stainless trim that goes between the front grilles on a 41 Champion. It is maybe 18" with a J-shape. Thanks!

Never heard such a thing but I suppose it is possible. I got to see a Stanley running once. Took most of an hour to get ready but it moved out quickly once the pressure was up. Very cool car.
