  1. Some years ago, I heard that there was a guy that got a copy of the original drawing from the archives for the front floor mat for a '29 President. There was some mention that he might be in the process of making some for sale...so much for urban legends. My car is missing the correct mat as well as the "hand control and brake lever floor plate". The floor plate part number is 247798. I don't know what either of these parts look like and I'm wondering if anyone has either item in any kind of condition that they would like to sell so that I might be able to copy them. I have the plate and collar that go around the steering column, so I'm good there...
  2. What if you had someone crawl under one of the existing cars and make you a template, then you would have a better reference of where you want to go. Then you could draw the correct version like you have done with the existing. With drawings in hand, you might consult some highly regarded frame shops and perhaps Mr. Glick. Though I believe your repair will be in compression while static, the flanges might be in various load conditions while driving. The cut upper flange makes me wonder a bit but I'm no engineer...that's why I suggest talking to a pro. The other thing is, would you be happy in the end with only moving the frame back part way? With my ballpark eye, it looks to me that your rear wheel would be almost 2" lower with the 3" adjustment vs going the full 7". Okay I'm done here...really want to see this car finished.
  3. I'm looking into taking apart an early Cuno, push button cigarette lighter without damaging it. It's in nice condition but I need to find the correct knob for it as the current one does not match my car. My car ia a 1929 Studebaker President. I can make a knob but don't know how to remove the one that is on the assembly. I am tempted to try to start unscrewing things but thought I'd ask first.
  4. Well, I really don't think that the setup would take too much time. I've been thinking about casting slightly oversize, in aluminum but in two pieces and welding together. Take a look at the web under images to see good photos. They are all mostly alike...
  5. Yeah, it could be cut with a CNC and that may be how this all goes down but thought I'd explore my options and try to wind up with something that looks a little more like the original piece. That and possibly easy to manufacture as I'm sure that I'm not the only one in this boat and if I were to wind up with extras, I coukd trade them off for ...
  6. Guess I could have been more specific...while there are several of these gauge units for sale on the web, I've pretty much eliminated all of them as they don't fit my car. Studebaker used more than one King-Seeley model fuel gauge in different cars and the one used in the President in '29, was a little smaller than others. What I'm hoping to find, is someone who has reproduced this unit on their own and may have a spare for sale.
  7. While working on my gauge cluster for my '29 President, I tried to remove the ring holding the glass on the fuel gauge and of course, some of the ancient pot metal gave way. Problem being, none of the usual vendors seem to sell the model unit I have. A local foundry is willing to cast a new body but I would be left with considerable machining after the fact. Wondering if anyone knows this part and has cast any spares? It looks like a good candidate for a 3D printer if one can be located...anyone know of one that shoots metal? The reason for removing the glass was to get to the gauge face to repaint or at least touch up.
  8. Looking to get tips on the best way to remove an FH body from a rolling chasis. I am working on my '29 and while under the car, I see surface rust that I want to remove. I want to do a complete job of painting the frame and under side of the body. Perhaps if someone has done this without damaging anything and is willing to pass on pointers, I would appreciate it. By looking at factory photos, I see that they used lifting fixtures but I'll need some other method. I believe that the body is pretty stout but want to be very careful not to damage anything. Lifting the body up and rolling the chasis out seems like a logical approach but where would I want to lift from and what all is involved in disconnecting the attaching items...how long should the removal process take?
  9. Anyone know if the oil pan on a '29 President is painted the same color as the engine paint or is it black?
  10. Looking for a pancake style oil filter for the President eight that bolted to the side of the motor. Want only for appearance so condition not a huge factor. Also want an original cigarette lighter, working or not. The lighter will have a brown phenolic thumb button.
  11. I've got the rear end apart on my President and want to change out all the seals. There are a pair of seals on each side, in the tube of the rear housing itself. I believe that the Studebaker part number is 158117. The axle bearing retainer also has a seal in it that the parts catalog calls a "washer" with a part number 158115...it says cork. My questions are as follows: Where should I look for these replacement parts and do I have to press the bearing race out of the retainer to change that seal? I honestly didn't look too closely at the retainer... Are there modern day equivalants for these seals. I don't know for a fact that any of the seals leaked, just thought I'd change them from a preventative maintenance standpoint. I could leave the seal in the outer bearing retainer alone for the time being as it would be easy to change later, if it leaked. Any advise would be appreciated.
  12. First off, you will be better off looking for n.o.s. parts but I doubt that you will actually loacte the actual plug you need. What you can opt for however, is another Yale Junior plug for another model , say Dodge cars of similar years. You would have to find a plug that would be longer, then modify it to work in your cylinder. I would extract the plug as stated earlier, then you will see what you will need to go after. Your lock has a short tail on it so it's an easier hunt at least. Don't waste your time with old used handles as the pot metal cannot be plated and any of these old parts, if still in one piece, are usually only being held together by the corrosion that has killed them. Have new handles cast out of brass...
  13. Looking for 1929 FH brake shoes. Can be either front or back but they have to be the three shoe style. Useable cores or reconditioned, it doesn't matter. Also need the mounting hardware.
  14. Still looking... need at a minimum, a matching ring and pinion but rather, a complete differential for my '29 President FH. I have a complete rear end for sale that I believe is from a '29 Commander...reasonable.
  15. Doesn't sound like you actually do have what I need so, to anyone out there that does have president parts, please send me a line as I'd like to get things going.
  16. Thanks, I'll take a look at the price guide as you suggest. Sounds like a good place to start. By the way, the car is a two door.
  17. A friend of mine asked the best way to go about selling his wife's Pontiac. They bought it new and I believe it has 40,000 miles on it. His wife no longer drives but the car gets a drive every so often. It's always been kept in their garage and he tells me that if it was raining, his wife wouldn't drive it. The car is dark metalic green with a green vinyl top. I don't know what options it has but pretty sure it has a/c. Looks like a small v/8 and atuomatic. No accidents and in rather good condition. It looks like a '72. So just how does one calculate a fair price and what is the best way to go about selling a car like this?
  18. Differential or ring and pinion needed for President 8. I'm told that '29-'33 will fit. The ratio should be 4.03:1. Could also use a 20" snap ring for a '29 or would consider a whole 60 spoke wheel.
  19. Still looking for a decent differential for my Studebaker President I believe that the ring and pinion interchange from '29 to'33 but not sure if the differentials do but I think so... I need a 4.03:1 ratio. This, I believe is the standard ratio for an FH in 1929. Also need one 20', sixty spoke wire wheel with snap ring for the same. Thanks
  20. Looking for a differential in decent condition and a couple of 20", sixty spoke wire wheels, with snap rings. Might be interested in other parts as well...
  21. WTB for '29 Studebaker FH parts: Gas pedal assembly Rings (for 60 spoke, 20" wheels) Reproduction rubber items Ring and Pinion (or whole differential) Pancake oil filter (any condition) Would consider any other spares or reproduction items for same car. The ring and pinion should interchange between President models '28-'33.
  22. Well, thanks to all who responded. I guess I know where I'm going now...
  23. Looks like your ring is the wrong one. When checking to see if you have a wheel or ring I am looking for, first check to see if it is 20" in diameter. That will narrow the field down to a few as not very many cars with 60 spoke wheels, came in a 20" size. As for the ring, originally I believe it was chromed but also should have two pins sticking up where the ring ends close. This was for a little oval plate that secured the rings ends together. It itself, was held on by cotter pins, I believe. Again, it too should be for a 20" wheel. thanks George for responding...
  24. So what's the deal? I've not been able to locate any original or reprints of any shop manuals for eight cylinder models for 1929 or 1930 Stude- bakers. I do have the reprints of the chassis and body catalogs but what gives on the books with shop practices? While I'm sure that I can improvise and use manuals like Dykes and others, I'd like to get my hands on the real deal.
  25. Well, yes those are the right wheels but without rings, I won't be able to use. If anyone out there has some 20" rings for these wheels, we can likely make a deal. Otherwise, I'm still on the hunt for wheels.
