  1. I have a 1948 DeSoto clock made by the Borg Clock Co.  Since it has been sitting for 40 plus years I didn't really expect it to start ticking when I hooked it up to a six volt battery.  The light bulb worked, but no ticking.  I had a 2 amp fuse inline that looked good.  But what I really need to do is clean and oil the works.  So I removed the bezel and tried to remove the glass, but the dial knob needs to come out as it holds the glass on.  I tried to unscrew it, but I was just spinning the hands.  Does anyone know what to do now?

  2. And times are changing in car tastes.  Pre-1955 cars have been dropping like a rock for the more common makes.  I see the same Chrysler Town and Countries on Ebay with asking prices in the 90K to 120K range, but I hardly ever see them selling.  I just saw a 31 Packard cabriolet in good condition where the bidding went up to 40K, but the NADA guide said the worth was between 90K and 162K.

  3. Keiser just noticed on another site that he sees a notch in the back part of the hinges, and that's what I think the green DeSoto spring is hooked onto in the pic above.  I thought it was that flimsy clip thing on the left.  I don't know what that is for, but I don't thinks it's for the hood spring.  Oh, now I know.  When I looked at the green DeSoto again, I saw that the little clip is for the hood release cable!  Thanks for your help on this!

  4. I had this problem on my 48 DeSoto.  I couldn't figure out what was wrong until someone told me that some previous mechanic might have replaced the oil pressure line with a brake line.  I checked the line going into the oil gauge and sure enough, it was a brake line!  The oil gauge uses a pipe fitting type of connection, not a brake line.  But finding the correct fitting was practically impossible.  Not an O'Reillys or Rock Auto type item.  NAPA either!  I had to get another one from a parts car!

  5. Chrysler Motors magazine was a monthly magazine for Chrysler Motors workers.  It has articles on the various hobbies of the workers, such as painting, bowling, having a luau with Hawaiian shirts, leis, and ukeleles.  But I am including the two most interesting pages for car guys because they are about the new Hemi V-8 engine, which came out that year on Chryslers, and the next year on DeSotos.

  6. This is the best pic that someone sent me on how a 48 DeSoto mounts the hood spring.  It looks like the bottom hook goes on with the closed side pointing out.   I also include a pic of my car's lower bracket that I'm pretty sure is where the lower hook goes to.  But it seems like the hook would just slide off of that bracket?

  7. It looks like the top hook does go through a hole in the hinge in the pic above.  I guess I should first install the hinge mechanism before I try to figure out how to the put the springs on..  If you look at my second pic, there is a little clip on the hinge that looks like it might be for the spring?

  8. It's been so long since I saw the hood on my 48 DeSoto (40 years) that I've forgotton how to put it on.  I assume the first step is to mount the front fenders.  Then bolt on the hinge assembly.  Then, screw bolts from the hood into the hinges.  But how do you mount the coil springs?  This blow up from the Parts List only tells me to put the coil part of the spring down.

  9. I recently sold a Fulton Sun Shield visor on Epay.  I sold this part for several hundred dollars, but am concerned about the shipping.  The USPS tracking says the box was Out For Delivery four days ago and continues to say Out For Delivery.  The part was shipped only about 80 miles away to the Los Angeles area.  I have messaged the buyer to see if there is a delivery problem, but no reply.  Has anyone ever had this problem, and does anyone have an idea of what is going on here?? I just hope it is not some kind of scam!

  10. From a 1950 Chrysler mechanics quiz.  You might need to brush up your valve knowledge by watching this Chrysler filmstrip from 1949.  P.S. - As noted on the quiz, if you return this quiz to Chrysler Corp. after March 31, 1950, it will be returned ungraded.  So I will let you grade yourself by supplying the answers below.
