  1. You take it for granted that USPS, Fedex, and UPS, as well as others, are going to drop and throw your box multiple times.  I once asked a USPS clerk if by writing FRAGILE!  DO NOT DROP!!! on the box made a difference in how the package is handled.  The clerk said "NO!  Stamping Fragile and Do Not Drop on a package is mainly to make the customer feel good".  Another reason to pack well!

  2. Another thing about the seller's feedback is he has zero sales.  All 20 feedbacks were of things he bought, so the Town and Country is the first thing he has sold on Ebay!  I doubt very much that the buyer actually sent him the money.  If he did, I think Ebay would get it back for him.

This seller now has another car for sale on Ebay:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-Buick-Riviera/273444551393

  3. that's a real mystery unless it's a fake sale by a scammer.  That price looks too good.  At that price, I'd buy it.  There's not enough pics and there is no detailed description except a list of items the car has.  And no location is kind of a tip off that it might be fake.  It looks like some in another country or in jail copied a few pics and made  a fake ad.  He has only twenty feedbacks which could be fake as well.

  4. I was wanting to buy an early car to add to my collection.  My idea of early is anything up to 1933.  I looked at some 1929 and 1930 DeSoto sixes and was disappointed with the tight space in the front seat.  I also tried Ford Model A and had the same problem.  I'm only 5'10", but I am also over 200 lbs.  The steering wheels went about half way into the seat area.  For me to be comfortable, I like the steering wheel bottom to be at the front part of the seat.  I read in an ad for 1930 DeSoto Eights, that they had adjustable front seats.  When did other cars start to get adjustable seats?  Does a 32 or 33 DeSoto have an adjustable front seat?

  5. this video is good but doesn't say how to take the window out of the door.  I found out that you can disconnect the window regulator by cranking the window down and finding the two discs where the regulator is attached.  Behind the two discs are two spring clips.  I removed the spring  clips using a screw driver to pry them.  Then I pulled the window up and out the top of the door.  I tried to remove the glass from the window bottom channel, but put a hole in my hand instead.  I was hammering the rubber in the window channels but the screw driver slipped and I stabbed my left palm!!!  Ouch!!!  Better idea:  Get new window bottom channels from someone like Andy Bernbaum and throw your old window away!

  6. I just bought a new door glass for the driver side door on my 1948 DeSoto 3-window coupe.  That was the only cracked glass on my restoration project.  The glass looks good and I got it from an Ebay glass seller for $45.  I was at first hesitant to buy because the pic they show in the ad is not shaped like my door window, but that is just a generic photo, not the glass you will get.  Also my door is hard to open because the rotary lock gets stuck and the outside door handle sags down.  Does this mean I need a new door latch assembly?  And the window won't roll down and I saw that one of the window wheels or rollers broke off and was at the bottom of the door.   I have looked for repair instructions for car doors and can't find anything.  Does anyone know where I can find the parts as well as the instructions for replacement?

    Thanks, Marc.

Well, I've noticed that the new generations, if they like old cars at all, want them street rodded.  They don't care about preserving the past.  Street rodding is a different hobby than Old Car Restoration.  They have very different goals and taste.  Comparing them is like comparing Classical Music with Rap.  They are just not comparable!!!

  9. Yes, the DeSoto's were at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Mission Valley near the old Town and Country Hotel.  Next August the convention will be at Branson, MO.  The modified 51 DeSoto was purchased by the owner from a hotel in Hawaii that used it as a Saipan or shuttle bus.  They put bench seats going sideways with a another bench seat in the back.  The impressive thing was the Koa wood roof, which my photo doesn't really capture very well.  It was impressive.  Also I won A DeSoto sign made by the president who made about 15 or 20 of these beautiful signs out of plywood in the difficult DeSoto script letters.  It's about three feet wide and I'm going to mount it on my garage wall in front of my DeSoto.

  10. I haven't attended a National DeSoto convention since 1991, but I was very impressed with the DeSoto convention in San Diego this weekend.  The cars were just awesome with about 40 on display.  It proved to me that the single marque original car club is not yet dead.  It was amazing when at the awards banquet one of the hosts started talking about the origins of DeSoto and introduced Hernando DeSoto himself in full armor, helmet, and battle axe to address the convention!!!  It turned out that San Diego had an advantage with that since San Diego was discovered by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and our "Hernando" portrays him on the replica of Cabrillo's ship in San Diego harbor.

Just 20 miles away in Poway was the Hudson, Terraplane, Essex convention which was even more impressive with about 85 cars on the field.  I've never thought much about Hudsons before because you never see them.  But you sure could see them here in fantastic restored condition.  I never knew Hudson's were so beautiful!

  11. Hi John,  I'm attending the National DeSoto convention right now in San Diego.  Maybe you remember when I hosted the 3rd National DeSoto Convention in Carlsbad, CA in 1988.  We invited the WPC club, so maybe you there.  This convention is going great and the car show is tomorrow with about 40 DeSotos showing.  I've seen a 1929 business coupe all the way up to some 59 DeSotos.  I can see that the '29 DeSoto business coupe looks easier to get in than the 31 four door sedan.  It has a wider door and a few inches more leg room.  The Hudson/Nash/Terraplane club is also have their convention this weekend in Rancho Bernardo.  Does anyone know when Chrysler started making front seats adjustable?

  12. I tried to get in a '31 Desoto 4 door sedan today and the owner warned me that it's hard to get in.  I thought it would be all right so I tried, but realized it was just too small to get in.  I think most people who weigh more than about 160 lbs would have a hard time getting in.  Did new cars in those days have different bolt holes where you could put the front seat back so larger people could fit?
