peecher
The Ford ring and pinion will not interchange with the '39LZ rear axle. The only thing that will fit that rear end is the 4.44 or 4.22 gear set.
imported_Phil Knapp
Hello Birger,The reason that the 1939 Zephyr ring and pinion gear will not interchange with the early Ford items is that Lincoln started using a "hypoid" gear set in 1938 and contnued until 1948. This was done to lower the driveshaft tunnel in the floor and is now used by all car manufacturers. The pinion gear enters the ring gear at a much lower angle. The only way to get a higher gear ratio in a Lincoln Zephyr is to install a Columbia overdrive axle. Take a look at the Columbia Overdrive installation photos at the end of my Webshots photo album at: http://community.webshots.com/album/73152974bRlXIf to see the difference in the gear sets. The Columbia axle in my car was built by my good friend (of over 40 years) Dan Krehbiel in Temecula, California. Dan is the Columbia advisor for the Early Ford V8 club and is also a member of the Lincoln Zephyr Owners Club. I can provide you with Dan's address if you will e-mail me at kcd@texas.net.
