Electronic control unit.

Recommended Posts

I installed a electronic dist (slant 6 ) in my 1938 dodge flathead 6. Works real good, but I noticed a couple of days ago that the ECU unit was leaking some thing out of the bottom. So whats the problem, or what I should I do?

Very good question. I would contact the manufacturer of the unit and pose the very same question. I presume the unit was designed for 6v. Pos ground?

If you adapted it from a slant 6 I assume it is a stock Chrysler unit.

There is nothing in there to leak. Are you sure it is coming from the ECU?

How did you get it to work on 6v+ ground? Or did you change to 12v? Would like to do this on my own car if it can be done on 6 volts.

The ecu unit has some kind of material plastic or resin on the under side. All I can figure is it gets to hot and melts. I live in Phoenix Az.The truck gets up to 205 in slow or stopped traffic. My truck is converted to 12 volts. The conversion is easy but I dont know if it would work on 6 volts. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

The electronic components are "potted" in some type of plastic or silicone. They are supposed to be sealed in and cushioned from vibration etc.

I have never seen one do this, on the other hand I live in Canada and no doubt it gets a lot hotter where you are.

Is it an aftermarket unit? It is possible the unit is defective. Either that or some part is overheating badly, probably on the verge of failure. Weak transistors, capacitors etc often burn up when they give up the ghost.

I suggest you replace it before it goes completely.
