Guest imported_Speedster
Yep, When I Customize a Packard, Everyone says 'Shame On You'. But When this guy Darrin does it, A lowly junior car turns into a $200K Jewel.
Guest imported_PackardV8
Speedster: MY sentiments exactly. I would much prefer a 160 or better yet a 180 convertible. There is a 160 convert about a mile from here (resto "in-process")but the price is outragous. The Darrin is another example of media blitz. If Clark Gable hadn't bought a Darrin then it would be considered V8 Clipper status. I wonder if the CCCA calls the Darrin a "true classic"????? 6219_Rules
To answer your question PackardV8, yes. They are. Here is the CCCA link to the Packard list of CCCA accepted Full Classics. Full Classic Packards All Darrin bodied cars are considered Full Classics.

Guest Randy Berger
Darrin was a custom-body builder like Rollston, Derham, etc. Custom bodies were for the very rich. It's also where/how Harley Earl (everyone bow down) got his start.
Guest imported_Speedster
So, Randy, you're saying that it was Okay, for these guys to customize Packards, but Not anyone else? If you customize your Own, you don't have to be Rich to have one. (I did my Harley Earl bow) I hope you know I'm Joking ???
Guest Randy Berger
If you have to explain it, it aint funny I've seen so many butcher jobs by so many "customizers" that most of it is just junk. I watched a recent Boyd Coddington episode where they cut up an original 59 Impala. The dolts also whacked up the firewall because they didn't know where to place the engine. There are a lot of fools out there with more money than brains. Money alone obviously doesn't cut it. Then again I personally saw the Sniper and although I don't know how it handled or how roadworthy the car actually was, it was a gorgeous customization - the exception to the rule.I just get tired of seeing junk that everyone else says "way cool". It aint!Custom body building was/is an art. Not everyone is an artist.
WCraigH
Here's another 1940 Darrin Victoria! It does not appear to be the same one because its top is cream color whereas the eBay one is black. This one was displayed at the 1999 PI Centennial meet in Orange, CA. I've used a link rather than image because the JPEG is about 250KB even at 640x480: 1940 Packard Darrin Victoria Also, on the theme of custom bodied Packards and from the same show, here's Fred Mauck (PI)'s: 1951 Packard Patrician Dietrich Anyone know of a later model custom-bodied Packard than this 1951? Guest imported_Speedster
Yes, I agree, it takes more than Money. It takes a Great Designer that knows what works and what doesn't, to make a Great Custom.
