Fred Rawling
I need a new ring gear installed on my carrier. Does anyone know someone that will do that work. The local shops freeze up when they hear that it is riveted on.
Guest
There is no secret to riveting it on. You just need the right rivets heat them red insert them and upset them with a rivet set. Rivet them back and forth always on the opposite side from the last one (like you would tighten wheel studs). The only thing to watch is that you dont keep hammering them to upset them. It should just take one solid strike. Certainly not more than 2. Back in the sixties I could cut the rivets off with a cold chisel (no power tools where I was), punch out the old rivets, clean the carrier, heat the new rivets and have the new crown gear installed in about an hour.An alternative would be to tap the carrier and use cap screws or even bolts and nuts provided you tightened them properly. If I used bolts and nuts I would probably wire the nuts on.
