Can anyone tell me what each number

represents on the tin tag on the

carburetor? #7023051

1963 Oldsmobile Starfire with A/C.

Thanks

Here goes: 702 is a prefix code for 1960's Rochester carbs, 3 is the year produced-1963,0-model carb,5-division-Olds,1-transmission-even numbers-automatic,odd-manual trans. The 5th digit is not always accurate as 0 should be a 1bbl carb and that carb #in Motors manual is a 4bbl and the 7th digit same thing as there were not too many manual trans for OLDS.

Hope that helps.

Thanks very much. You are correct.

My Starfire carburetor is 4GC 4bbl

and it has an Automatic transmission.

Not many manual transmissions in the

Oldsmobile line.

Thanks again

A little additional information. While it was often true that the 7th digit being odd denoted a manual transmission (primarily Chevrolet and Pontiac); it often meant automatic with air for the other divisions. In this case the non A/C carburetor was a 7023050; the one with A/C 7023051.

You will find MANY anomalies to the guidelines, which are just that - guidelines. ALWAYS best to check a list by tag number for exact application.

Jon.

Jon, thanks for that info. The reason I

have asked the question. I have found a

rebuilt carburetor that was used on either

a 1963 Jetstar or F-85. The tag number

is so close to my Starfire I was wondering

if it would work. This carburetor number

is 7023054 my carburetor number is 7023051.

I believe the the Jetstar used a two speed

transmission. The Starfire has a four

speed unit. Not sure is this carburetor

has air conditioning or not.

Thank you, that is very interesting.

Nice website too. I see you sell

carburetors too. Do you all charge

a core charge? I tried to rebuild

my carburetor myself, but I never

could get the floats adjusted exactly

right. I've lost track of the times

I've taken the carburetor off to adjust

them. The floats must be set exactly right

othterwise carburetor will flood itself

to death.
