Interesting, Rick......"original" to what??? the guy who jury-rigged it? I think I counted about 12 hoses comming out of the "thing" Maybe it's one solution to a T/L that 's gone on the fritz? The ad also lists A/C, but I don't see any sign of an A/C compressor, so maybe the Martian thingie produces cold air too?....lol.

I guess I've been spending too much time lately restoring a 1948 Cletrac Crawler and I've seen quite a bit of "Agro-American" engineering...(like if you lose the air precleaner, just tack-weld a coffee can on the hood)

You know that Cooter and Billy Bob are from mars. I'll bet they had a hand in the "improvement".

He said the Air-Ride system parts have the Packard name on them ???

(could it be something Packard was experimenting with or a factory option ???)

I think the buttons below steering column (below dash) control the Air-ride.

He also said the A/C in description was a mistake, (No A/C).

All the parts, missing in pictures, are supposed to be there.

The owner had bought it at an estate sale. It belonged to a guy over 80 years old, that passed-away. The Reserve is at $7,000.

Hi Rick,

I doubt either is the case, unless this is a prototype of the system used on the 1965 Packard V12...........

Brian,

That's what I thought it was also.

Maybe the guy that owns it, doesn't really know what it is ?

(I think he was going by what someone told him.)

Someone in this forum needs to buy it and let us Know.

Under the dash, right below the steering wheel, looks like some kind of 4 button control panel. I wonder if that is to control to 'Cooter' Brand Air Ride. The only time I could see a for that many lines is if every air shock or whatever is in there has some kind of return line. My first question is where is the compressor? Or is that UFO thing it? Weird. I have seen a lot of aftermarket airbag/airshock type systems, but nothing as bizare as that. Most have a compressor and some type of storage tank. I could see that maybe that every shock had to have two valves. One to the regulate to pressure into the shock and one to release the pressure in each shock. That would explain all the lines. All systems now can do that with a single value/line. I count 12 line. That would make 3 per shock. Or two per shock, and one used as many a vacuum control line? I guess it is a UFO. Underhood Foreign Object.

It looks like it has a reservore on it, Could be to grease all the grease fittings in the front end of these things automaticly? we have to find out out more about this Option? Could this be a car that Packard used as a test car on the track for endurance runs so they would not have to grease the front end on the long runs?

Hi Albert,

Some of the early pre-war cars (both Packard and others) were fitted with the optional Bijur central "one shot" lube system, but this installation looks a bit too "Cooterized" to be a factory or dealer installation. Also, the endurance run cars I'm aware of were 1955 Pats, this is a '56. I think it is more likely a home brew solution to replace a dead T/L system with airbags or air shocks.

Someone started to redo this thing. The dash pad has been redone and not right. The door panels are redone and lousy job. The dash has been repainted burp-le. The grille is in serious misalignment just under the parking lights. It needs interior as well as exterior chrome. I doubt that is original seats. It should be in Florida - isn't that where Mickey lives?

I?ll vote for the still. Cooter & Billy Bob figger'd them revenooors won?t never look under the hood of the ?ol Pakerd. Plus, one of them hoses goes straight to the driver?s seat case ya get thirsty drivin down them dirt roads??..

I think you might find this plumbing nightmare in a vintage JC Whitney catalog with the legend attached: "increases __________ by 22%, improves resale value by X %. Another sure sign Billy Bob and Cooter were there: Ford Blue engine paint. I am hearing the "Hee Haw" theme in my head now.

Hey Grandpa, what's for supper?
