While you are checking things you should knock out all the core plugs and clean the block out. When I worked in a GM dealership in the late 50's and early 60's this was one of the main reasons for overheating. I have seen ten pounds of crud scraped out of the water jackets. There is no flush that will clean the jackets as well as a manual cleaning. My 53 Buick had 39,000 miles on it when I got it and it had never been out of the Moose Jaw city limits. (39,000 miles at under 25 mph). It would boil at highway speeds. I took 3 4 pound jam pails of sludge out of the water jackets. Five years and 100,000 miles later it started to over heat again and I got 2 pails of sludge out of the water jackets. Core plugs are cheap and it's not all that messy to do.
