  1. Fixed the old girl this AM, bad volage regulator, put on my spare and the proplem went away. I guess that does prove just because its new etc. That being said has anyone else had problems with Standard product durabilty. or should I be looking for another source, the reg on it now is used and would like to replace it with new. Thanks Don Young 1947 model56C
  2. To all; Last night we went for a ride in the late evening, the heater was on as well as the headlamps about half way through our ride the AMP gauge started fluctuating from charge to discharge and finally went to dischage, the car has a relatively new Standard brand voltage regulator on it, replace about a year ago for the same problem. Last time it has definitely the voltage regulator, the points were burned up, but this time I'm not sure as the regulator seems to be operating fine. If anyone has some help or suggestions with this it would be appreciated. Don Young 1947 Model 56 C
  3. I guess the splines were on the pinion and went into the shaft but will try raising rear end higher. I am using a twin post Hoist and dropped the rear end down so I could slide it back. Thanks Don
  4. The rear end on my super has been leaking at the torque tube seal for some time now, so Ive decided to replace the seal, also pack rear bearings. Fortunetly I have a hoist available for doing jobs like this, I got every thing apart and the rear axil to point to slide it back but the spline would not come out of the pinion gear, does any one know why, the unit repair manual is very vague on this. Thanks Don 1947 56 C
  5. Mike; Picked up a Wix 51100 today, thanks for the info. Don 47 56C
  6. Any one know a part # for the oil filter for a 47 buick, I'm pretty sure the last one I bought was a Wix but can't find the # anywhere on the filter. The OEM manual lists it as an AC C115. Thanks Don 47 56C
  7. To all interested; Having driven my 47 some this summer I thought it time to recheck torque on manifold bolts. I found them all to still be tight and the gaskets in good shape, not bunching up as with the previous manifold. It has a crack repair and I don't expect that to last, but am ready with a new[used] manifold & heat riser when the time comes. It's great to know that the next repair will be the last repair for this problem and now can spend more time addressing other needs. Don 1947 model 56C
  8. Bill; I bought it from Bobs about 8 years ago, hopfully he has changed his source since. I've always had great luck with any thing from Bob, but unfortunetly with this piece not so much, it warped big time. Don 1947 56C
  9. All; last year I posted about my problems with my manifold leaking, I have since installed the origional manifold that has a crack repair , so far so good, but as insurance over the winter I purchased a used intake, exhaust, heatriser assembly that unbeleavably is free. After much consideration I have come to the conclusion that my problems are being caused by the aftermarket manifold, so when it comes time I will install my new used manifold assembly. I am posting this a precaution to anyone who may be considering trying one of the new repop manifolds available on the market. Don 1947 model56C
  10. Joe; unfortunetly after a while it pulls in enough it starts to leak, takes about 3 to 4 months, but again thats with the after market manifold. Don 1947 56C
  11. To all; Car is in storage for now, haven't driven it since Nov. but so far every thing seems to be working well. I tried those copper clad gaskets on my car with no luck, but that was with rhe aftermarket manifold, it expanded and contracted so much the over the course of a season the gaskets would bunch up in between the exhaust and intake ports and eventually start to leak, but again that was with the aftermarket manifold. Am wondering if any one out there has used an aftermarket manifold with better luck than me. Don 1947 56C
  12. To all; finally had the time to, A repair, and B reply As it turns out as I suspected the manifold was the problem, when I first got it about 8 years ago I had it machined with the intake I took it to a machine shop again and it is warped. I decided to go back to my origional factory manifold that I had welded some years ago, So far so good. One thing I did find out will tring to repair is ,there is now a process used to weld cast iron in which the part is heated to 600 degrees then welded with a special rod then cooled slowly after the repair I could not have this done on mine due to the previous repair but have second manifold with a crack that I might try if needed. Thanks Don 47 56C
  13. Marty; Al Bell down in fla has one 400.00 you can find him on ebay, he has a vintage buick parts store on there. Don 1947 56C
  14. all; Finally got around to doing my manifold and unfortunetly it didnt work the intake rings sealed great but the graphite slurrey did'nt seal the exhaust manifold. Back to square one I just can' help but feeling my problem involves the aftermarket manifold I bought, has onyone bought one from Bobs? any problems? at wits end. Don 47 56 C
  15. Gary; checked Ebay for speedos and there are a few on there that may work for you, it appears the price reflects the condition, if you go to vintage parts and enter buick speedometer there are several in there. Don 47 56C
  16. All; Got my gaskets and they are just as Ben and Joe said, small steel rings that go around the intake ports, they have a raised area that will crush when the manifold is bolted up. The gaskets are new old stock Victors with the Buick and Victor part# on the package. Was wrong on the name of the company,it's N.B.Pease & Co. 43 Foundry St. Palmer Mass. 01069 413-283-7620 I'm planning on doing the repair over memorial weekend, will report how it went after. Don 47 56C
  17. Jaybird; according to pete they are steel but I don't have them yet, should have them first of next week, will let you know. Don

  19. I just checked my Buick parts catalog guide and I found a gasket company that sells the Oem style intake gaskets, Part # 1323724 , $10.00 for 4 of them . NBP 413-283-7620 [Pete] He is in Mass. Real helpful guy Don 1947 56C
  20. Bob's speedo service in howell Mi will repair yours, he's not cheap but does a great job on speedo and guage restorations. Bob's Speedometer 10123 Bergen Howell Mi. 48843 800 592 9673 810 632 0400 Don 1947 56C
  21. Its That time of year again, got to replace the exhaust /intake gasket again, seems like I do it every spring, when it expands and contracts the gasket wrinkles and it starts to leak. The exhaust manifold is a repop, not oem. I've tried everything and it still does it, this year I think I may just try a slurry of graphite and oil , am wondering if anyone has done this and how well it worked. Don 1947 56C
  22. I redid the system on my 47 in 2003 and bought all the parts i needed from Hydro-E- Letric out of Punta gorda Fla[941-639-0437], they made me up new flex hoses and gave me all the info about how to purge my hydro system[car had been sitting for what I figured was about 20 years and still had brake fluid in it]I just ran ATF through it till I was comfortable that the system was totally clean and I have'nt had any problems with any of the other parts[cyls. pump control valves] since. The only reason I had new lines made was due to the age of the old ones. Don 47 Super 56C
  23. Last chance, if you need a frame for your super convert, I have one you can have for free, am in the metro detroit area. Don
  24. Scott; I had the same problem with my car ,first I would Check the thermostat and if it doesnt already have one put in a 160 degree stat,if that doesnt fix it then check the timing that helped with my car, it was way off someone had clocked the flywheel wrong so I had to guess at the timing [timing marks are on the flywheel] after removing and reinstalling the fly wheel I finally got it right. then the rad. as above post above states this is most likly to fix it but now you're spending money the two previous are cheap things to address first. Lastly, if none of these fix it you will need to remove the freeze plugs, drain plug in the block and try to clean and flush the block the best you can, crap builds up inside it and restricts coolant flow I used coat hangers and mechanics wire with pretty good results, if that does'nt work the head will need to come off and you will have to do some real cleaning. Don !947 56C
  25. Personally I would consider rubber freeze plugs a temporary fix until the correct repair can be made. [A real freeze plug] Don 1947 56C
