I agree completely with Pontiac59's answer in the other thread. A non-car savvy female college student should [color:"red"] NOT be driving a 50 year old car back and forth to school, even one what is fully restored. Hey, stuff breaks after being in service that long. Plus, there's the matter of the Bendix Treadle-Vac...

Poster Ronney's described problems are indeed fixable.

A properly balanced driveshaft is probably half the problem. The T-U sticking in park was common on the early versions and may be caused by one of two things:

1) The manual valve sticking which can be fixed by grinding off the rear ramp of the neutral and park detent (remove the pan for access).

-or-

2) The surface on the parking lock gear teeth is rough or the parking pawl is binding on its shaft. This is fixed by removing the rear housing and parking lock gear and grind teeth smooth or make more clearance on the shaft. Originally, Packard had a new parking lock gear to fix this.

The transmission can remain in the car in either case. However, you need the service manual and the "Twin Ultramatic" supplement to see what to do.
