55PACKARD
Well i took down the shield to see if the torque convertor botls were loose or the flex plate was cracked and everything looked good..Then i had a friend take a look at it and he said and we both felt it was internal in the trans..I went to a trans shop and they looked at it and determined that the toque convertor was going and thats what is causing the loud knocking noise..I need some opinions do i rebuild? or do i convert to a chevy trans and where do i get the adaptor kit for this..or Do i go for the gusto and through in a freshly rebuilt 500 cid caddy motor with a th 400 trans...please give me your humble opinions please i am lost now....
MBL
Dude...I am soon to get the 727 conversion. It makes sence. The 727 you can find in a junkyard with little difficulty. Rebuild kits are cheap and a well trained crustation can rebuild one. They are almost bulletproof as well. Its more expensive than any other conversion that I have come accross not matter how obscure the combo...why that is...I really don't know. But if you weigh the difference between the cost of a Twin-Ultra rebuild and the conversion you will still wind up paying less for the conversion and have a better transmission.TimMBL
Guest AlK
If I read correctly you still have not determined that the tranny is bad only the torque converter. Now I am not a mechaninc but the AlA. chapter of PAC held a workshop earlier this year and we took out a guys tranny and tightened up some bolts that were loose, causing some leakage and had the thing back in and running in under 3 hours. Get a new converter and install it and see if the tranny is bad. I know, I know if the tranny is bad then you have extra expense and a T.C. that you have no use for if you go the conversion route. However think like an optimist not a pessimist, the tranny shop said it was the converter, and it drives well except for the noise, shifts well I am assuming, then try it. Exhaust all possibilities before you bite the big kahuna of tranny or engine/tranny swap.
Guest imported_Speedster
If the noise is coming from TorqueConverter then, I would first take it apart and see if it is repairable. Internal parts for TC are available, saw some on eBay last week.
WCraigH
If the TC is truly beyond repair (torn up internally), then you could get a good used one from Mike Dulinsky <mnpacsler@aol.com> for way less $$$ than a tranny conversion.
55PACKARD
Thanks guys yeah i dont think the conversion is east never said that, but in the long run you now have a 3spd trans and i think it would be a little more reliable in the end a little costly up front too,but neverless i think it might be better..Now i always thought and was told if a torque convertor was going or shot the internal parts fins and so forth break up and can go into the trans fluid and I was told this by a trans rebuilder so i think i will have to go the trans route because i dont feel like spending 2500.00 to have it rebuilt when i think the conversion would be a little less i would like a GM trans if possible is there anyone selling a conversion kit for that..???Thanks again on you opinions...and help
Guest imported_Speedster
Yep, You need to take it apart, to determine extent of damage, before making a decision. I like to keep'em Original whenever possible.
55PackardGuy
'55,You'll never get a new one in 'til you take the old one out, right? So, while it's out, take that baby in to the trans shop and at least get it opened up. THAT shouldn't cost too much, and it's a worthwhile "bet" because you might find out it's a reasonable re-build. The "R&R" has to happen anyway. So, doing the first "R" before you decide on the second "R" seems to make sense, no? Heck, tearing things down is the fun part! Good luck! This might be a lot less painful than you think...
