Well i have been driving the car lately to local shows i still havent sloved the vibration problem i had. I thought well if i drive it slow and local maybe it will show its cards..Well it sure did last night i went to a show afterwards out to dinner. Came out to go home started the car and OH boy I HEARD A LOUD banging noise coming from the trans area...Weird thing is i put it in drive right away the noise was gone put it in nuetral the noise was there again, Well i thought to myself i better get this home before i cant so i drove it slow and easy it took me a half hour which normally takes me 10 minutes i took all the back roads so if it did break i was on a side road not a highway..Anyway it made it home but when i put it in park the noise was there again...My question is how do i get to see the flexplate or torque convertor, and is it a like a Gm trans or ford, chrysler how does the torque convertor bolt up can the trans come off with out removing the convertor i looked under there today i seen no way to visable look at the flex bolts i need some help here where can i began..And now is it time to do a trans conversion..Can i get a conversion to bolt up a GM trans maybe an overdrive ???I am now really confused what to do...

Through the Packards International newsletter you can find the name/address for a 727 Torqueflight converter but it runs about $850 if I recollect correctly; if you are interested I can find a copy of the newsletter and post the information. My '55 Clipper Super is so-equipped and was that way when I acquired the car.

How about either locating a manual or finding an old Motor book which explains quite a bit about these cars. Seems to me a look inside might save you a lot of $$$$. No need to jump the gun and spring for a conversion if all you have might be a loose flexpalte. i have an old Motors and could possible give you the lowdown on how to access the flexplate but I'll bet others here can do it from memory. Let me know and I'll try to help as best i can.

How many times do we have to [color:"red"] SUGGEST that you buy the 1955-56 Service Manual and the Parts and Accessories book??? If you had the SM you could look in there in "Twin Ultramatic" section, page 9 "Servicing the Transmission", section "Transmission Removal". You'd find that there is a "flywheel housing lower cover" which must removed to access the flexplate. The P&A book, plate 29 has an exploded view of the engine including the lower cover (GP 5.0604). From there, it's "cake".

Considering throwing out the whole T-U she-bang and replacing it with a conversion at this point is exactly the same as your previous idea of throwing out the V-8 and replacing it with a SBC. Way overkill and probably not even close to necessary, no matter what's actually wrong.

There is a small access cover on the bottom of bellhousing held on by 2 small screws, on my '56. But it is small and you may not able to see much.

You can also remove the lower front half of bellhousing. It's cast aluminum and held on by 4 bolts on bottom and 2 on each side, I think. That way you can see most of flexplate and torqueconverter. Like you said, you may get lucky and it's just a loose flexplate bolt.

[color:"red"] Yep, Looks like Some kind of Love/Hate Relationship there, Doesn't It?

[color:"blue"] The first thing I do when getting another car, IS GET the MANUALs You end up with a lot of Manuals, for cars you don't have anymore, but HAY, you can use them for answering questions on Internet Forums.
