52deluxe
i will be getting a chrome one at the next car show. long tube with two outlets at the bottom, one hooks up to the radiator overflow tube the other is just a breather. they run about 30-50 bucks depending on what u buy, i may just get one for the truck as well "flat black". the hardest part is finding a good place to put it so its not only functional but looks good, if i were u i would stop at a parts store and see if they will let u borrow one for a min to see where it will fit. i may have to modify the air vent tubes a little to make one fit. for now i just check the fluid 1 a week.just a thoughttom

Guest imported_Speedster
I don't think an overflow bottle was an option in '55 (was it?), but I put one on my '56 and it works great. I used a flat-black colored plastic type, mounted next to radiator and most people don't know it's not original.

Guest imported_Speedster
Yes I did put on a new Cap. I think it was a 22psi cap.
55PACKARD
What i heard of a 16 but i never heard of a 22 psi i sure hope you dont have a 22 you might blow the raditor right out of the car with that type of pressure... 52deluxe
wow 22psi, your much braver then me. i run 9 lb i think might be 13max, i sure hope thats a typo because a radiator that pops is no fun. the radiator in my car did that at about 50mph before i had it recored, it took over a week to clean up the mess. i had antifreeze all the way on the trunk lid, all over inside the engine compartment, on the windshield ect. not to mention if your freeze plugs are getting "old" this might be enough pressure to pop them right out of the block. i would consider a cap with 13psi or lower.just a thoughttom
WCraigH
Whoa! Pep Boys or whatever has an easy solution to this problem. The only diff between an open (original) and a closed rad overflow system is the fact that one uses a modern rad cap and an overflow bottle. My 55 Pat has a 13 psi Stant cap with a PB "Big Car" overflow plastic catch can and it has been in 115F stop and go with no coolant temp problems. 55PACKARD
So what you mean is to use a closed type rad cap an overfill canister then i should be fine right....

Guest imported_Speedster
I checked the pressure rating on Cap in '56 and it is 22psi.Have Not had any problems with Radiator or hoses. It's been on the car several years now. When I first installed it, I checked if fluid was geting to overflow tank and it was. So it must be working like it should.
