Looking for help in the Lansing Michigan area for upgrades

I bought my 77 Salon last summer and have been saving all winter for

Duals and 3:42 gears - wanted Headers, but thats another story.

I finally get a hold of my guy who can do this work for me and he

tells me that the duals - cats and mufflers/pipes and hangers will be

between $400- 500 without labor. He does restore cars professionally

and would ensure that they are done right and sound right. "No cobble

job like Muffler Man"

He tells me for the gears it would be around $250 and the $250 for

labor..

An estimate over the phone was $700- 800 for parts and $700- 800 for

labor.

I have been out of the car world for many years, but this seems

steep.

Any help on what you think it should cost would be helpfull..

If this means anything - my guy has been on several nationally televised

car shows and is considered an expert in this area.

Do I spend a little more/ alot more and get it done right or find a

backyard mechanic??

Do these prices seem fair? ANyone know of someone in the area that is reliable?

Thanks

Rob

I think you've answered your own question about why the estimates are high.

The gear setup sounds about right for NEW posi gears and installation. The exhaust sounds a bit steep, but is probably not out of line since you're getting two cats. Consider yourself lucky to find someone who will do full duals on that car. Most shops are afraid of an EPA fine since the original exhaust configuration is changed.
