Mac Elliott
Lately I've detected the smell of gas from the engine compartment when driving our '91 coupe in town (< 25 mph ) with the windows down. It only occurs from time to time. I can't find any source for the odor. No leaking is evident on the engine or on the garage floor. Any gasoline detcetives out there ? As always, thanks. ronvb
Possible disconnected hose running to charcoal cannister, see below post and answer from Barney Eaton:Checking for fuel leaks, if none are found, look at the fuel vapor canister. It is located under the relay center (drivers side front)I have found two cars with the hose disconnected, thus a raw gas odor. ronvb <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Shelby
Try not filling the tank all the way to the neck. If you fill it to much it over fill the carbon in the canister and the gas smell comes out. But check those old hoses.
Guest Greg Ross
I had the Gas odor for years and went excavating for it several times unsuccessfully. Eventually when doing the engine change had everything stripped out of the corner to reach the cannister and found the hose from the solinoid valve disconnected. Once the engine is running this solinoid valve opens to allow vapors in the charcoal cannister to be ingested via vaccuum into the engine intake.
