95 Buick Riviera with OBDI

My 95 Buick Riviera with 3.8L Supercharger is certified to OBDI according to the emission sticker under the hood. The ALDL port is a 16 pin connector. According to the Haynes Emission Control manual, some 1995 General Motors vehicles used the updated (OBDII)16 pin connector link to the ECM, which because it is certified to OBDI standards, should be able to use the SES light to diagnois SES issues. Does anyone have information as to which pins to short to use this information ? Also, because of the present of the Electronic Climate Control Center, is there a different procedure to start the access to the ECM. It appears that each GM vehicle may be different. Any help would be great appreciated.

As good as the Haynes Emissions Manual you have might be, if you have some concerns about checking codes, you really need two things--a GM service manual for that year of vehicle and model of vehicle and a QUALITY code scanner. Pulling the codes can be the easy part, but when two codes are set because of a third malfunction (temporary or constant), that's when those who are trained in such things come into play.

I know that in earlier years of GM computers, you could short the two terminals together and it would flash the Check Engine Light in sequence for each stored code, after it got past it's original dummy code (which preceeded the real codes). By the time that OBDI came around, there's a bunch more data in the data stream now than in the earlier times. This is where a quality code scanner comes in--not an inexpensive one from the auto supplies. Plus, in some cases, it can be somewhat time consuming to let all of the codes flash if there are many if you try to check them without the scanner.
