Need '30 - 40 Series Engine

Need a rebuildable '30 - 40 Series engine with no head or block cracks.

My sad story: Sent the engine out to be rebuilt. I asked how much since he wouldn't give me a written quote. $3,000? He said more. I said $4,000? He said no, probably more like $4,500. He's had the engine 1 1/2 years now and called to say it's done. Price? Over $9,000! I've got $300 into it so I figure it's his. Thus I'm looking for another engine to start over. And can someone recommend a reliable trustworthy engine builder that can stick to his price? <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Thanks,

Ken

Ken, sorry to hear about your situation. It seems like you should be able to work something out with this guy. He should have kept you up to date on the progress and the costs involved before getting so much tied up in the engine. Legally, I don't know where you or he stands as it sounds as though you had nothing in writing for an estimate. Did you sign a waiver stating that you did not require a written estimate, or have your dealing been completely verbal?

As a former mechanic, repair shop owner, and current hobbyest, and can see both sides as I have had situations where I got into repairs that cost more than an owner was willing to spend (and rightfully so), fortunately I notified the owners BEFORE parts were ordered and work undertaken, even if there was no written estimate. In my many years as a mechanic I was never given a "blank check" for a repair no matter what the project was and how wealthy the owener was (as a matter of fact, I find the wealthy owners keep closer tabs on the costs than do the people who have to dig and scratch to find the money to cover the repairs).

I would see my lawyer if I were you. Good luck.
