Guest
While jogging the engine over for some other reason, the starter stuck on. Whenever the battery switch was turned on the starter was to. Pulled the starter and put on jumper cables, it acted as it should, the solenoid would activate only when the terminal was connected to the feed. Checked the small wire that goes to the solenoid terminal and it was hot. Disconnected the wires to the switch on the Carter 2bbl, checked with a continuity tester that proved that was not the problem but the result is still the same. The car does have Dynaflow, does anybody have any idea why there is juice to the to the solenoid terminal with or with out the ignition or starter switches[being on?color:red]
old-tank
Check your voltage regulator and generator...properly connected and working units are necessary for the starter circuit to work correctly. Disconnect one at a time to verify that you have fixed the 'hot' wire problem, but be aware that a good unit is needed to for normal starting.Hope this helps.Willie
Guest 53and61
A starter relay with contacts that are stuck closed would cause your symptoms. The contacts are connected to the terminal with the red tracer wire and the one next to it. With the wires disconnected from these terminals the resistance across the terminals should be infinity unless the relay coil is energized. So the contacts could be welded together giving a zero resistance, or the coil could be energized because of a short. If you measure zero resistance across the contact terminals, try disconnecting the battery; if the relay opens, the trouble is a short somewhere allowing current flow through the relay coil. Guest
Found the problem, there a is small black box up on the firewall. It is shown in a wiring diagram and called out as an solenoid relay. Traced the problem back to there and found a coil and set of points inside. The points had some 'stickers' on them which I filed off, then polished the contacts and the problem went away. Thanks to those who offered help, Chuck [color:"red"]
