1947 Cadillac Trunk Handle

My '47 trunk handle spinss and spins with no action to unlock or lock the trunk down. I took the mechanism apart and found that the pin or screw (bolt?) was missing from under the handle. But the piller that holds the locking mechanism is a very soft metal and apparently the old bolt (what have you) has scored it severly. I tried putting in an expanding pin but to no avail.

The lock itself works fine. And the dual clamp system works too. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

And so far no one seems to know how to fix my handle droop problem.
