Buick document history in July 1917, showing standardization of the 242 engine for all future Buick 6 cars.

At the start of the 1917 model year in July 1916, there were two 6 cyl Buick engines.  The big 331 6-cyl engine for the D-55, and the light 6. They dropped the 331 for the 1917 model year and during that year developed a more modern engine to replace the large 331 but smaller and yet more horsepower. This was the 242 engine, introduced in January 1917 for the E-49 7-passenger touring model, 60 HP and only 242 inches to replace the 331 inch with only 55 HP.  Here we have the decision in July 1917 to drop the light 6 and make all 6-cyl Buicks with the 242 engine for 1918.
