Guest rlbleeker
Recently bought a '62 Cutlass. In park and in all gears it make a sort of growling sound. I'm pretty sure it's the tranie, since I hear it in the car much more than under the hood. I'm used to PowerGlides and such whining, but this sounds different. The car seems to drive ok, shifts fine, doesn't slip. Is this common? What does it indicate? Do I need to start rebuilding a spare? Thanks in advance. rocketraider
Make sure the fluid is at the right level. Those RotoHydraMatics (yes, Cutlasses had a version of them too) can be really sensitive to fluid level and either too much or too little will make them do hateful things. Another possibility is that the pump is cavitating due to a crack in the torus cover. Common ailment for these things. The only sure fix for that is another cover.
