FOR SALE - 1953 MG TD Restored but Original engine and transmission and most of the other parts; excellent condition - $19,900

Recommended Posts

This classic with British red exterior and black and tan interior was fully and BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED around 2015.  And great care was given to retain the ORIGINAL ENGINE and TRANSMISSION in this amazing sports car, as verified by the “dumb iron” which is stamped “TD24770”, matching the Car and Engine plate stamp of “Car No. TD / 24770”.  The original XPAG in-line-four engine is fitted with the original twin SU H2 carburetors.  This particular TD is one of the few which are colloquially referred to as the “TD2” because it was made with a larger clutch, larger ring gear, and larger starter than supplied on the earlier TDs.  This classic starts easily and runs solidly and is great for cruising around town.  The four-speed transmission shifts easily with the original synchromesh working cleanly.  The shift lever does not jump out of gear or cause “gear chatter” as is often the case with the earlier TCs and TDs.  The clutch operates smoothly and easily.  The brake will lock all four wheels for great stopping power.  This beautiful car has been garaged since its restoration and has ZERO rust - anywhere!  The carburetors were professionally restored by Joe Curto in 2021.  The last engine rebuild is unknown, but it runs cleanly and does not burn oil.  Top speed is advertised to be 78 MPH, but has never been driven over 45 MPH since acquired by this owner in 2018.  A compression test in 2018 showed values of 80, 110, 80, 100 for cylinders 1 – 4, respectively.  And this rare beauty features equally rare wire wheels and a heater (both professionally installed by the original owner as “after-market” upgrades not available from the factory for cars shipped to the US).  Under the distributor cap, the ignition system has been upgraded to the Pertronix electronic ignition system which is far superior and more reliable than the original “points and condenser” system, but a new set of points and condenser are in the glove box to restore the ignition system to original, if desired.  This open-air beauty comes with the black soft top with all side curtains.  Classic-style (aviator style) lap and shoulder belts were installed to be used, if desired (but not legally required because the car was not originally equipped with them).  The dash is a beautiful burled walnut.  The oil filter has been converted to the “spin on” style for easy oil changes and the oil pressure reads a steady 65 psi while at or over 2,000 RPMs.  The engine never over-heats, even when it was being driven for a couple of years in the Arizona summer sun.  A Clean Idaho title will be provided to the purchaser.

Nice looking TD but some personalization.  The original steering wheel , air cleaner would be my preferance.  Wire wheels and fancy dash are nice touches though.

Hi teens seems to buy a pretty good TD though.  A bit more to go back to a TC or up to a TF.

Thanks for the comments, Steve.  Yes, I too, wished that the original steering wheel and air cleaner system had been retained along this car's journey through life.

Thanks, John.  I appreciate the compliments (and so does the wife).  After I purchased the car seven years ago and dug deeper into the restoration, I was surprised at the detail and quality.

@53mgtd2 apologies as I was looking at this and mistakenly - no carelessly thought it was listed in the "not mine" section where we routinely comment on ads. I would never knowingly criticise an ad posted by the original seller elsewhere sorry.  That said it is indeed an MG I would love to have.  And while no expert I have been following them for a long time.

You already know about the air cleaner and a lot of folks will prefer the meatier wheel on the car I am sure.

I think it's better than most at your price and it should move quickly.  Ignore my nitpicking above - FWIW I think these T series MGs are underrated in terms of the cars themselves and their place in bringing sports cars to the states.

Hey Steve, I understand and no problem.  Actually, I really did not take your honest comments as criticism; this MG indeed does not have the original air cleaner system nor the original steering wheel.  What may be more important, however, is that it does still have the original engine and transmission (with the SN stamps still in place to verify), both running and performing admirably.  Thanks for caring, Steve - we're good!
