first car made

Benz in Germany was the first to put an automobile into production, a three-wheeler he built in 1885. Just when his first delivery took place is not clear. It could have been late 1885. It seems more likely that it took place in spring of 1886. In the United States there were tinkerers, but no industry until 1896 when the Duryea brothers first started production of their automobile.
------------------
Peter Gariepy
peterg@aaca.org
www.aaca.org

Peter's right about the first production cars made, but the French are considered the first tinkers to put car vehicle on the road in 1769. Charles Cugeot made a steam powered three wheeled vehicle for the French Army to use as a casson to move artillary. It ran, but was not very successful as it was almost impossible to steer. The boiler and steam engine were over the single front wheel. This arrangement also made it impossible to navigate through the muddy roads of France. After two attempts at building this wooden monster, the idea was scraped. The first car was destroyed, but the second vehicle is in a museum in France. The first attempt by an american to experiment with a self propelled vehicle was by Oliver Evans in Philadelphia, PA in 1805.
Henry Ford is given too much credit for his accomplishments. He did not invent the automobile. He did not invent the first mass produced car ( Curved dash Oldsmobile 1902). He did not even invent the assembly line. He just improved upon others ideas, but somehow got all the credit.
------------------
tsauto@v35.com
AACA member, Pottstown Region
'60 TR-3

According to This Old Truck magazine Ol' Henry did invent one major vehicle innovation of note; the regular production, steel-bodied pick-up truck! Otherwise he pretty much was an expert in who to hire in management and engineering, and how to destroy company labor relations.

Are we talking about "autombiles" powered by an internal combustion engine? If not, then the SAH [society of Automotive Historians] is agreed the the first self-propelled ["auto-mobile"]vehicle was the steam-propelled artillery tractor built by Joseph Cugnot, in France, in 1770.
------------------
Yann Saunders [aka "Mr. Cadillac"]
