Bob Shafto
The steering column shift lever on my automatic '66 Galaxie squeaks. It seems to originate behind or within the gear indicator on top of the column. I shot some silicon down there, but no change. Any ideas on what to try next? Thanks! m-mman
Behind the die cast plate that holds the TS switch there is a nylon bushing that is between the plate and the shift tube that runs the length of the column and actuates the lever under the hood. There are also nylon bushings at the bottom. They could be defunct and causing your noise but pulling the column apart can be tricky if you have not attempted it before. If you remove the steering wheel and spray some oil (WD40?) under the plate it might run into the place where it might do some good. Otherwise It may need a complete disassembly to check and lube everything.
