My Boss Has a 1924 or 25 (i cannot remenber what year) 1 ton truck. the truck runs wonderfully, but the fuel pump does not work. we have to pour gas into the canister on the fire wall to get it to run. it runs until the canister goes empty. and then we have to refill it. Does anyone know how to rebuild this canister, or where to get a new one? It has a complicated mechanism inside of it and i have no idea where to begin.

The Dodge/Graham trucks of this vintiage do not have fuel pumps but use a vacuum tank to pull fuel from the fuel tank. The canister you refer to is the vacuum tank. Although it may look complicated it is not hard to service. It sounds like you have taken the top off and that spells trouble. Because it relies on a vacuum if the tank has a leak or is missing the top it will not function. I think you need to go back to square one. Put the top back on the tank. If the gasket is torn you will have to make a new one or apply gasket sealer to the top. Pour fuel into the tank using the pipe plug on top. Reinstall the plug and start the engine. Check to see if you have vacuum to the tank from the intake manifold. if you do check to see if you have vacuum from the vacuum tank outlet to the fuel tank. If you have vacuum at the fuel tank and it is not pulling gas you have either a hole in the pick up line in the fuel tank or the pickup line is plugged. Send me an email address and I can send you instructions on working on the tank.

Lots of luck, Jan <img src="/ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />

We have put the whole thing back together, but when it was apart we checked the needle valves and they were all worn out . there is vacuum at the canister, because when i open the top valve on it while the engine is running, i can hear the vacuum sucking. I do not know about the tank though i will have to check.
