Art B
Can anyone help me with the alignment marks on the crank & cam gears for a 31 series 50 engine? Each gear has a mark on it, but I can't find a picture anywhere that shows how to position them during assembly. I'm pretty sure there is a mark on the generator gear as well. My copy of the original shop manual does not have a picture. The only info is how to measure when the #1 intake valve is supposed to open. I can't figure how to use this info to align the gears. Oregon Desert model 45
Timing marks should line up between crank & cam gears same as this 1924 motor pictured. Kevin
Bob Engle
Generator gear is not critical. The only thing timed on the generator is the distributor and you can time that on TDC of # 1 cylinder. Bob Engle
Art B
Kevin & Bob: Thanks for your help. I'll give it a try and see. I thought I had tried it that way & it just didn't seem right. Another question: The oil slinger has a keyway cut in it, but the key doesn't reach in front of the crank gear so it doesn't turn with the crank. Does it just turn from friction with the gear? Or does it mount behind the gear? That doesn't seem right, because it wouldn't shield the front seal. Thanks again, Art B
