1936 Buick Series 40 carb heat valve

Gents: That external thermostatic spring which operates the valve that controls hot air coming up into the intake manifold - on my car, it seem floppy and there is no retaining spring on the back side. i suspect it is not working properly as tension feels goofy, and i don't believe it ever changes position. This may be contributing to some vapor lock issues. I live in Tucson so i don't think i really need to add heat to the carb. Does anyone just remove these things? Or wire them open? If i want to be stock, any ideas on where i could get a replacement thermostat spring?

Thanks for any ideas.

Jim
