Should sealer be used on rocker pan gasket?

Recommended Posts

I have removed and painted the rocker arm covers on my 1959 364V8. I am replacing the old gaskets and want to know if sealant should be used. If so, what type of sealant should be used and should it be used on both sides of the gasket or just one side? If just one side, which side?

I always use sealer on valve cover gaskets, and put it on both sides. I can't say I have found a sealant yet that doesn't leak within a short time.
I use rubber gaskets because they can be reused if they are not to old.

Here is my method for a dry nailhead: Glue rubber gaskets to the valve covers with 3-M weatherstrip cement ( all surfaces must super clean and degreased...brush a thin layer on both the gasket and the valve cover, let set up for 5 minutes and press together ); use a medium bead of anaerobic sealer on the gasket and assemble as usual. Be sure the valve covers edges are straight and that they are not bowed from overtightening.
Willie
