I recently joined this forum since my wife bought a 1953 Dodge Coronet D46. It has the 230 flathead 6 with fluid coupling, 3 on the tree and no overdrive. I also have the service manual for the vehicle which has been a lot of help thus far. I drained the trans the other day and the previous owner was running gear lube in. I bought sae 10 non detergent as the manual calls for filled her up and the car sat for 1.5 days. I go back out and there is a huge oil spot on my garage floor. I'm assuming he ran thicker gear lube so it didn't leak out. It is leaking from the rear oil seal on the transmission. My question is where can I look to find a seal for it? I've tried google and couldn't really find anything. I am new to finding parts for older cars so try not to hassle me too much. I appreciate the help in advance.

Hi;

I assume you have the 'Gyromatic ' trans?

Try Googling Roberts motor parts and Andy Bernbaum. Also, recommend a copy of Hemmings motor News.

I have a '53 Coronet 6 myself, 4 door, stick w/overdrive. Long, long way to go with it yet.

Most parts are available from your local parts stores. NAPA is said to be good on old car parts. Best is a dusty old shop with a gray haired or bald headed old parts man with a rack of paper catalogs on the counter. If there is an old dog asleep on the floor, so much the better. See if you can find where the local farmers buy parts.

Other than that Andy Bernbaum and Roberts Motor Parts are the best known old Chrysler parts specialists. Vintage Power Wagons is good to but of course, for Power Wagon truck parts. But they use the same flathead engine as your car.

Thank you. I was looking at the random box of stuff I received with the car and there is a roberts catalog in it. Has everything I need. Although I will try to find a shop here locally so I don't have to order parts and wait as this dodge is a daily driver.
