Mazda Miata

This post is for the more technical of you. I own a 67 Skylark (most of you know that by now) and a 96 Mazda Miata. Some people like stuffing V8's into Miata's, but it seems to be pretty much either the Ford (www.monstermotorsports.com) 5.0 or the Lexus 4.0 (bullet.ion.tm). I was curious if anyone here think that a buick motor would fit in a Miata. No, I'm not planning on doing this (well, I have dreamed of it actually) but just for the sake of it being done. I mean, think of it, the lowly 300 that I complain is to weak has 260 stock horse and 340 stock torque (according to the owners manual at least). A race ready miata that can do the quarter in ~12.5 only has about 230 horse or so. Anybody interested in that?

Sorry to say, but on the Miata forum it's been discussed and decided that a GN with Turbo would not fit, and besides, they said that it would be a biatch to fit the turbo piping in if it did.

Well, with a big enough hammer, you can make anything fit....but...
Personally, I'd go for the Ford 5.0 conversion, given that the kit is available and the engines plentiful and relatively inexpensive, you get a modern V-8 (a pretty good one at that). I've seen two of these conversions at local shows and they are very tidy and create a 90's version of the Alpine Sunbeam Tiger/AC Cobra 260/289
Now, if the itch to put in a Buick engine has to be scratched, how about the 215 aluminum engine? It's a 40 year old design but it currently used in the Rover vehicles (Discovery V8). In the Rover world there are a fair number of aftermarket products available. A salvaged Rover would even be a reasonable source for a modern transmission.
Cheers,
John
------------------
John Chapman
BCA 35894
jmchapman@aol.com

When it comes to engine swaps.....never say never. You may have seen the 401 powered Harley I have posted here, or the "Boss hog" Small block Chevy powered Harley that you can buy right now. I have even seen a SB Chevy powered Honda ATC 90 that looked like it came from the factory! The photos I have here are of my mid engine 401 Buick powered 1948 Chevy Pickup. They aren't very good photos, but the one on the left you may be able to see the motor in the cab. And on the right photo you can see the black steering wheel in the upper left of the photo. It had a 16" long drive shaft and I had made a metal box over the motor that was so slick most people didn't even know the motor was there, even while riding in the truck! When I say it hooked up well, that would be a huge understatment. It only ran a 14.62 at 95 MPH in the quarter (I wish they had given the 60 ft. time back then) but it would beat 12 second cars at half track! The motor was stone stock with only headers and a 3.08 one legger, and would get ZERO wheel spin. It is no longer mid engine, I guess I came to my senses. But when you say "It can't be done" is when a lot of people will just go and do it!!
------------------
buickfam@aol.com
Life long Buick Fan.
1965 Skylark H/T
1965 Gran Sport Convertible
1948 Chevy Pickup with 401 Buick.
[This message has been edited by MARTINSR (edited 06-15-2000).]
[This message has been edited by MARTINSR (edited 06-15-2000).]
[This message has been edited by MARTINSR (edited 06-15-2000).]
[This message has been edited by MARTINSR (edited 06-15-2000).]

Just to pick nits on the horsepower issue (rainy day outside), a stock '67 300 has about 210 hp.
My 340-4 has the 260 rating.
In any event, your can't compare 1967 advertised hp rating with those published after 1972,as the method of measurement changed. My 260 hp is now 195 by the newer standards. So, knock off about 25% when comparing to modern engines.
------------------
Yellow...
No nits to pick, I don't think...
I was referring to the 215 Cubic Inch ALL aluminum engine that Buick built '60-63 and then sold to BLMC, where is was used in Rovers, Triumphs and a few others. Still sold in the Range Rover Discovery.
Cheers,
John
------------------
John Chapman
BCA 35894
jmchapman@aol.com

my thinking is not what buick motor to run but what rear? The stock rear can't handle a 302s power over the long term. unless someones figured something out that i don't know (possible) its just another thought.

A few years ago, a company was producing the miata with the 5.0 ford engine , with the entire car engineered for the hp. I think they were all blue with a white stripe in the center. One of the car pbs shows did a segment on these cars...They ran like a raped ape...all you saw was smoke with the tires squeeling....

I for one agree, I don't care for the ford motor (hence I ignore those posts). ANd as far as stoplight wars, my miata actually wins against mustangs (it has a 7.8 ~ 8.0 0~60 time). It's not speed that wins, it's dumb ass punks who don't know how to shift or have smoked their tires so many times their clutch's barely catch anymore. Bah, I'll stop now

Whoa, Freak... no more testosterone on your Wheaties, OK? It's just an engine, not a religious conversion. There are so many of them because it's inexpensive and works well for the price. 'Nuff said.
JMC
------------------
John Chapman
BCA 35894
jmchapman@aol.com

The next time I hear of any Ford 5.0 swap in anything, I'm going to puke! They suck! They are referred to a poor man's hot rod. I'm a poor man but I'd never even think of owning a 5.0. I have more self respect than that. I work on the major cruising road here in town and I see about 10 million 5.0's every hour. Everyone that own's one think's that they are such a bad ass for it. Yeah right, like owning a 5.0 would ever make anybody original enough to be considered a true bad ass. All it is is a small engine in an even smaller car. Do you realize you can do the same crap with a four cylinder VW bug and go faster for way cheaper! Even Car Craft doesn't like printing crap about them, they know what I'm talking about. I know many people like me that hate selling parts for 5.0's. They are like the Butt Slap Boys(back street boys)and the N'STINK of the performance industry. I live for the stop light races against 5.0's because I smoke the SOB's every time.
