1941 Packard 160 Convertible Coupe

Recommended Posts

Frame-off restoration completed in 2009, and it looks quite good today with only limited use. The dark burgundy paint looks spectacular in the sun, and the bodywork underneath is very nicely done. Much of the chrome has been refinished, including the tall Packard grille (the thermostatic shutters work as they should) and bumpers, although things like the side grilles up front are original and in good condition with very minor pitting--they're probably too nice to restore but not quite as nice as the rest of the car.

The interior is a gorgeous glove-soft tan leather that's probably a few shades too light, but the workmanship is beautifully done. The patterns appear correct, and the seating surfaces are so creamy soft it's hard to resist running your hand over them. The gauges appear to be rebuilt and they all work properly. The heater and defroster are effective enough to drive you right out of there, the radio hums and pulls in static but I haven't been able to find a station with it, and sadly the clock is not working. The tan canvas top is new as well, and folds easily and seals up well. In back, the trunk has been upholstered to match the passenger compartment, which I don't believe was correct for 1941, but it sure looks great. The trunk floor is 100% original and 100% solid, so this was never a rusty car.

The 356 cubic inch straight-eight was fully rebuilt, runs very well, and probably doesn't have many miles on it since the restoration was completed. A lot of Packard guys will argue that this is the best engine Packard ever made, and after driving this car, I'm inclined to agree. It is so seamless and vibration-free that it could almost pass for an electric motor, and torque is monstrous at any speed and in any gear. Detailing under the hood is well done, with Packard Green paint, black accessories, and a new cloth wiring harness. The chassis is solid and clean with only light signs of use, and it cruises effortlessly at highway speeds.

A beautiful, Classic Packard convertible, available for less than what it probably cost to restore.
