Guest jcc3inc
Good morning,The A/C clutch on out 97 LeSabre is making noise and generating metal chips. I wonder if I can replace the clutch ONLY while in the car since the A/C seems to otherwise be operating well. When I engage the air cond, the noise goes away and the cooling seems OK. Does anyone have comments on this? The car has 113K on it and nothing has yet been changed on the air conditioning. Thanks,JCC
DAVES89
If it is the outer clutch you should be able to get that done. However I would not wait to either get it addressed or put a bypass eliminating the A/C clutch as that thing will lock up and then you will be stranded. Guest wildcat465
It is getting tougher to buy replacement clutches these days. It does require the right tools and some skill to do it right. Most if not all parts stores will want to sell you a complete compressor assembly that has the clutch and bearing and pulley all set up and tested good.I agree with Dave as well, it will fail soon, you will lose the belt, and you will be sitting on the side of the road.Tough news, but replacing the compressor is not difficult and frankly the part is amazingly cheap for what you are getting, less than $200.
