Hello, I purchase a 1940 olds with a hydramatic tranmission. Where and how do you check the fluid level. What fluid do I use? Thanks.

To check the fluid level the engine and trans should be at operating temp. Drive the car a little first to be sure the torus (fluid coupling) is full of fluid. If the fluid level is low some fluid will leak from the torus back to the trans as fuild always seeks it own level. Park the car and SET THE PARKING BRAKE and let the car idle in each gear for a few seconds to be sure there is fluid in all of the control body passages. Then put the trans in neutral and with the engine ideling pull the trans dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it all the way and then pull back out to check the fluid level on the dipstick.

You should use a Dexron fluid like Castrol Dex/Merc. It is for all older GM auto trans. Ford trans use Type F. fluid.
