bd72
What is necessary to convert my 1936 Dodge to 12 volts? Is there any reason not to do this?
Rusty_OToole
It costs money and time. There is no reason to do it. The 6 volt system is fine as long as you keep it in repair.I have seen it before where someone changed an old car to 12 volt because it needed a tuneup or the starter was wearing out. So they blew hundreds of $$$$ bucks changing it over. Then it still wouldn't start so they did a tuneup and replaced the starter LOL.How to change your Dodge to 12 volt. You will need to install a 12 volt battery, alternator, and change all the light bulbs. Don't forget the dome light and the ones in the dash.Your radio can be converted by an expert radio repair man, you will need all new tubes and a vibrator. You will need a 6 volt power source for things that can't be changed like gas gauge and heater and windshield wiper motor and horn. Or, you can change them out too if you can find gauges and motors to fit.Not much chance of that I'm afraid.Voltage drop devices can be bought from hot rod suppliers. And reverse the wires on the ammeter. One more thing. Save all the parts you take off so the next person can change it back. This will get you back most of the value you lose by changing it in the first place. If there is something wrong it would be easier to just fix it.
