Check Your Brakes!

My Franklin has been stopping fine (at least as fine as any 4,500 lb car from 1932 stops) and the pedal is good and hard. I decided to pull the drums anyway to have a look. All four wheel cylinders were leaking badly. Someone suggested that if there was a leak, I would see fluid on the backing plates. Well, the boots were holding all the goopy mess inside. Things are not always what they seem. If your car has hydraulic brakes, inspect them regularly!

Believe it or not, the wheel cylinders for my Franklin are available new from Napa. However, at over $100 a piece they were not cost effective. I had them rebuilt by Apple Hydraulics for $85 each, sleeved with brass. I live local to them, and they had them ready the next day!
