cam sensor/crank sensor

i have a 1990 coupe with 90,000 miles......i had some rough performance in my engine.the fuel mileage dropped.i have it in to be looked at nad the mechanic says it may be the cam sensor.what is it and what does it do?is it the same as a crank sensor? thanks in advance gryfan

Welcome to the site...there is an abundance of good and helpful folks on here to provide you guidance with keeping your Reatta running smooth.

The 1990 does have both a camshaft sensor and a crankshaft sensor. They work together, somewhat but, are two different sensors.

The car will not run with a bad crank sensor. It will run with a bad cam sensor. Computer puts car in limp mode, [average settings]. Perfermance and milage suffer......ken
