Do I have a weak fuel pump?

Recommended Posts

Guys, I need your help. My beautiful 1964 Thunderbird runs & idles horribly! It was driving fine and suddenly it felt as if starving for fuel. I had to nurse it back to my home which fortunately was not far. It idles terribly and bucks and jumps when I raise the RPMs. Under load? Forget get about it, the engine just dies. Not sure where to start but I replaced the points & retimed the engine - no difference. I've got no vacuum leaks, I've checked the accelerator pump on the carb, no problems. Could this be tied to a weak fuel pump? Thanks for all input.

Hi John. Please don't take me wrong, but have you checked the fuel filter? How about pinched fuel lines elsewhere in the system. Dirt in the gas tank maybe. I'm still troubleshooting a similar problem with a 55 Ford. An old time mechanic had me change out the gas cap. The old cap was not sealing properly. The last couple of cruises it ran fine.

Let me know how you are making out....

Rich D.
