35 aluminum head Dictator

Hello all....I got my 35 Dictator rolling again after having the aluminum head welded; a crack by the corner bolt hole, also had the head shaved and used a copper head gasket. The motor has noticeable more power. Also had to fix a stripped out thread.There is a small crack on the cylinder wall about half way between the soft plugs and the head.I think it will heal up with some sealer.I hear this is common with this motor.

Yes that was very common on these engines.

That is why Studebaker redesigned the engine in 1936.

This engine was first used in the "65" and "10" Rockne (Cole-Vail).

The 1936 engine had a water distribution tube behind the water pump,

which solved the cracked block problem.

Many of the older cars had a 1936 and later engine fitted.

Motor mounts are different etc and you would need to swap

engine and trans ,because the bell housing is different.

Looking from the drivers side (LHC) of the engine,if you

can see the outline of the cylinders you have the older block.

The 1936 and later engines had a smooth side .
