  1. Sounds like a lock-up problem. How many miles on this car. When was the last time the tranny was serviced? Could be as easy as having the tranny seviced with a fluid changed. Then again it could be more. You might want to have it checked out. Good Luck..

  2. I believe the bulb # is 2057. No Steve, not all of the bulbs will light up when the brake is applied. I wish they did. All are lit whenever the headlights, parking, and fog lamps are on. When you apply the brakes only three bulbs on each side of the light assembly will light up. I think it would be very cool if when the turn signal is used the lights , starting in the middle, would stream towards the direction of the turn. I believe there's been some discussion on this subject before. If you're interested you might try the search function.

  3. I've got to agree with you Steve. I get a great feeling whenever I drive my '91. I'm sure most of the members "great feeling" is caused by different reasons. Whether it's because of owning a two seater at a relatively low price or that the vehicle itself is so unique or that it's a great looking car. It's different for everyone. I must admit, I miss the '89 I used to own. That CRT is just too cool. I will probably own another one some day. Enjoy your '91.

  4. I too ran into the same problem with a sticky oozing substance running out of what seemed the coil pack on my '89. My car still ran fine but the ooze was running down on the hoses and I was worried about a potential fire or it eating my hoses up. I went to buy a new coil pack and as I was getting ready to pay was explaining my problem and describing the ooze I was seeing. The guy at the counter told me it was not the coil pack but the control module directly below the pack that attaches to the coil pack. He said that the diaphram had ruptured on the module and the oozing was coming from that and not the coil pack. I took him at his word bought the control module instead, went home and went to work. Turned out he was right. It was not the coil pack. The module has a plastic, filmy diaphram that had ruptured. The oozing was definitely coming from it. I don't know if this might be a similar problem as what's been listed above but it's probably worth considering.

  5. My fingers are worn out from pressing that eject button. It just won't release it. At least I can still listen to the radio. After pushing the eject button in a series of three tries the radio will stay on. Does anyone have a procedure to take out the radio and the easiest way to dissasemble the player to remove the tape? If it's fairly straight forward I don't mind doing it. I hate taking it somewhere if it's relatively easy to get out. Hate paying those servicemen.

  6. Hi guys. I'll try to make this short. I have an '89 coupe. It hard starts in the morning turning over many times before it finally starts. Once warm it starts all day on the first turn of the key. The hard start is annoying so I took it to a local shop I've used many times. They worked on it all day, gonna cost me a fortune, trying different things. The owner calls me and is reading to me a GM bulletin on hard starts on the '89 model and says the fix is a Memory Calibrator/Prom. A light bulb goes off in my head. I seem to recall this memo being mentioned here on a previous post. The part # is 16141300 which is obsolete. The replacement part # is 16181867. Of course there's not one available in town. I was thinking a fuel pump or pump relay and told him that. He says the pump is working. Does this prom fix sound like the cure? I'm trying to find the part but gmpartsdirect doesn't recognize the part numbers. I sent Jim Finn a note. I wonder if he's at the rendevous going on now. Anyone else got a line on this part?

    Thanx Guys..

  7. The initial sympton was a very hard shift from 1st to 2nd. After consulting the discussion board a modulator was suggested. I installed one. I used the new vacuum line that was provided with the part. Unfortunately this did not work. Still shifting hard from 1st to 2nd. Further inspection of the tranny fluid found to be very dark. Not the nice pink or lite red color you'd like to see. I flushed the fluid and had new fluid installed. Still shifting hard. Tranny condition became worst. Now I notice that while the cruise is engaged and when I start to go up a grade, instead of downshifting as was happening before, the car starts to shudder. I then disengage the cruise. The car then downshifts when I step on the gas. I took it to one servicer who told me that it was a bad motor mount. I found that hard to believe and went to another. I've used the 2nd servicer several times and have more faith in his opinion. I felt I should have gone to him to begin with. He said that it looked like the tranny was malfunctioning. He's the one who gave me the price of the rebuild. He also suggested, like Padget, that if I were going to keep the car to buy a new one from GM parts to get the upgrades plus a warranty. He priced a new tranny at over $2000. I'm really not estatic to pay that kind of money for the repair. The new tranny would be almost a third of the original purchase price of the car. That's why I posted the question about salvage tranny's and what model of cars to look for.

That's my story in a nutshell. Other than the tranny the car is in great shape and is a real looker inside and out. I want the car to function properly. This car is my fourth Reatta and my first '89. I've owned two '90's and one '91. The '90's had minor tranny issues but not like my current one. The '91 had no issues at all.

    That's my dilemma guys. Opinions?

    As always, Thanx much... <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

  8. Hi guys. My '89's transmission seems to be on it's last legs. I've been told to rebuild will run around $1400. I'm going to start calling around to the local salvage yards to see if they might have one for purchase. As a rule, will they know what tranny would be compatible for my car or will I need to give them the part/model number or will I need to ask for specific years and models of cars whose tranny's are compatible? Which brings up a good question. What year and models of cars have compatible tranny's for our cars? My '89 has 45K.

  9. Hi Guys. I've got a headlight switch and a powerwindow switch on the way for installation on my '89 coupe. The problem is is that I haven't a clue as to how to get the cover off of the dash to get at the switch or how to get to the power window switch. I've tried the search function but I'm not having much luck. Could someone give me a hand at the proper procedure and tools needed to get the job done with tearing up the dash or console. Thanks in advance. This forum is great..

  10. Hi Guys. I've got an '89 coupe with what I think is a headlight switch problem. About half the time when I push the headlight switch, the headlights don't come up. The amber light on the switch will not light up when it's pushed. Then at other times the amber light will come on and the headlights will pop up and turn on. When I push the retract button on the console, the lights pop up with no problem. Only when the lightswitch button is pushed will they not come up and lights not turn on. What do you think? A switch? How difficult is it to replace? How do I get to it? Thanks as usual for the help.

  11. I purchased my first Reatta, 90 Burgundy Coupe, in 98. I was 41 at the time. I found that Reatta's are like potato chips. You can't have just one. I've owned a total of four since then. Two 90's, a 91, and my current ride an 89 coupe. Where I work I'm fortunate enough to be furnished a company car but I find myself driving my Reatta half the time. I just love driving it. I've always thought that I've stepped up in quality and shape of the car with each one I've owned. I'm always looking for that next magic car. We're all so lucky to be able to own such a classic car. At least they're classics in our own minds.
